Number of bleeps when putting thinkpad to sleep

I have an X31. Whenever I close the lid, the computer used to bleep once and then go to sleep. However, lately, it takes three or four bleeps before the computer goes to sleep after closing. What does this depend upon? How can I make sure it sleeps as quickly as possible? Thanks for any pointers.
