Custom ORANGE T40 lid anyone?!

#1 Post by Toine » Fri Mar 24, 2006 10:36 am

Update on the cover. Well after the poll, I decided to make it orange anywho. So here it is!!!!

http://members.home.nl/fritschy/oranje1.jpg
Here the cover was all polished, but I decided to have it powdercoated anyhow.

http://members.home.nl/fritschy/oranje2.jpg
here it's sand blasted, so the paint will stick to it better.

http://members.home.nl/fritschy/oranje3.jpg
Here it's in the oven, as you can see it warped alot, BUT after some long cooling time it whent away, and the paint stayed on it.

http://members.home.nl/fritschy/Oranje4.jpg
Here is it, all orange and beautifull

http://members.home.nl/fritschy/oranje5.jpg
Here it is again, but now with the cat. (it's not mine, but from the guy in the states that is powdercoating my lid).

The lid is now on it's way to the Netherlands for me to try it on. I bought a T40 to try it on. I would like to mess with my T41p and fail.
Man, I can't wait to see it in real person, with the black IBM sticker on it!

I'm well aware of the fondness for the color orange among the Dutch, what with the "House of Orange" and all that.

But I have got to tell you, that lid is UGLY! Capital UG, large LY!

Got about as much appeal for me as a mud fence.

I just had to get that off my chest and the image of that laptop off my lap.

Certainly is distinctive though, I'll grant you that.

HAHAHA, yeah orange is the colour of our queen.
But, if you don't like it that's okay. I actually did some thinking, and orange goes really well with black. So I decided to make it orange.

As a guy who once owned a '70 six pack Roadrunner, that "came" with the obnoxious "lime light" color, I guess I've no right to comment on the orange cover, but I will say this....

I doubt nobody will ever "lift" it from you in a public place. Can you imagine trying to look unobtrusive sneaking THAT out of a coffee shop/ airport......

My cat always used to sleep in my guitar case if I left it open, your cat is very happy looking. Can you show a picture of the machine together and opened so you we can see the contrast between the orange and black. That probably looks pretty cool.

I don't have it on the machine yet. It's on it's way to my house with the mail.

Black and Orange, done well, can be a very pleasing color combination; I know of a few people who would really enjoy that kind of a two-tone color job. :)

I think JHEM is being too harsh (and conservative).

Some might confuse your ThinkPad with a Voodoo Envy. Not necessarily a bad thing. They don't give the Voodoo Envy away you know. It is quite popular in some circles. :) And you can't accuse Voodoo Computers of being stuck in a Henry Ford mentality (any color as long as it's black)! :P

For some people change is hard.......well, for me it isn't. Anywho, those voodoo computers sure are HUGE! 8 pounds and a 17 inch screen. Holy mac, if I want to lurk around with my desktop PC i will take that with me and not that computer.

I agree that it's unlikely that anyone will try to sneak away with your laptop! There's a reason prisoners get orange coveralls. But for me, basic black will always be the way to go.

Just remember chrome will show finger prints.

I'm thinking about painting a 600E lid Blue or Black with an "IBM" logo in big letters on top.

But painting is not the way to go, powder coating is. Powdercoating will last. And you can put the IBM leters on there with stickers I guess.

I liked the color change and i agree that Orange goes very well with black.. I would however want to see the complete Laptop with the orange lid.. pictures in all angles in different states. Please do post them when you get itall set and ready.

Where & from whom did you get the job done?

Indeed, piano black would have been cool. BUT, orange is just a little bit more different from the rest than another black:P

No, in time it will bend back, and if I am correct there is an other protective layer before its really attached to your display.

So in other words, you should be safe and have no presuremarks
