My initial impressions

#1 Post by Mandrake » Fri Mar 24, 2006 8:35 pm

I just got my T60p (2623DDU) and I thought I would share some of my initial impressions. I have owned about 7 notebooks in my lifetime but this is my first Thinkpad.

When I first pulled it out of the box there was an initial "wow" reaction. I loved the straight black look. The grey of my Latitude D610 and silver of my Inspiron 9300 don't compare. I would pick all black any day.

After unpacking it I had to put the 9 cell battery in and it does wiggle a little. Nothing too annoying though. The annoying part came right after. I plugged in the power adapter to my laptop then a loud pitch screeching noise started coming from it. I grabbed the power supply and the more I squeezed it the louder it became. My wife said it sounded like crickets. I'm assuming it has a bum connection somewhere inside and I will have to call Lenovo for a new one. I'll test this thing out some more before I do that.

The plastic on top by the palm rest flexes some. No so much where it is annoying but my Inspiron 9300 doesn't move at all. I would expect the same thing.

I setup the wireless and biometrics, no issues at all. I'm testing out that little light right now in the dark and I could see the advantages of it if I traveled on a plane a lot. The keyboard doesn't feel any different then the one on my Inspiron 9300 but I also really like that keyboard. The Fn and Ctrl keys are in the wrong spot and that will take some getting use to. The fan turns on and off every once in a while and I can hear it but it is soft and I'm in a quiet room.

The track point rocks. Much better than the want-to-be one on my Latitude D610. That one often has a mind of its own. I don't think I would buy another laptop without one and now I may just want to stick with the Thinkpad track points.

Now what really amazed me...

I fully opened the Thinkpad where both the keyboard and screen were horizontal. There was no loss in color and only a slight loss in brightness. I could continue to work that way if I really wanted to. I can't tell you how many times at work I have to constantly adjust the screen of my D610 because I happened to change the way I was sitting. Very minor movements but very annoying screen angles. I will not have that issue with this. This screen is really amazing.

I will update more after I play with this more.
