ATI v5200 w/512MB?

#1 Post by jeremivw » Sun Mar 26, 2006 11:06 am

OK. There was an older thread where I mentioned this as a mistake in a review...but now I've got my T60p. The Adapter under Advanced settings in the Display properties clearly identifies 512MB. And there is no distinction about using another 256MB via system memory...

Anybody know what's going on here or what else I can do to get to the bottom of this "issue".

I may send my T60p back for having too much GRAM! jk.

Dunno what exactly is going on, but I believe that it's an issue with many ATI Mobility cards. Some people with 64MB 9600s or X300s reported their cards being listed as 128MB or 256MB...

same here under display properties it shows it as 512MB. Did they actually ship it with 512mb memory or is it a bug and needs to returned so that there are no problems at a later date ?

That is simply ATI's HyperMemory; same thing here. :)

On my x300, 64MB physical RAM, it reads 256MB; Hypermemory is simply a pre-fetch sorter. It just takes a chunk of system memory and optimize it for quick access to the video card.

Chris, thanks for the info. Is there a way to turn "HyperMemory" off?

After looking in the Advanced settings in the ATI Catalyst control center I noticed that even the Graphics Hardware section there still says 512MB! And I can't find anywhere to turn that off...

It may sound stupid (too much graphics mem!?) but 256MB for the GPU and my full 2GB (pagefile, hibernate, sys restore & HYPERMEMORY OFF) should be fine for my needs.
