Discrepancy between hdd usage and file/folder sizes

#1 Post by serpico » Sun Mar 26, 2006 6:32 pm

The used space on the hard disk is 39.5 GB (Local Disk Properties). However when I select all the folders and files on the disk (including hibernation file and pagefile), the total is 29.6 GB.

What's taking up the extra 10 GB? :?
T430: i5-3320M(2.6GHz), 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 14" 1600x900, NVIDIA NVS 5400M 1GB
W510: i7-720QM(1.6GHz), 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD, 15.6" 1600x900, 1GB nVIDIA Quadro FX 880M
T410s: Core i5 2.53GHz, 8GB RAM, 120GB SSD, 14.1" 1440x900

A combo of hibernation reserve, system recovery and page file is what's reserving that extra 10GB.
T60p 2623DDU / 2GB DDR2 / Dual PCIe Gigabit NICs! (OB & ExpressCard) / CardBus 5-in1 / 3, 6 & 9 cell batts / travel 65W & dual 90W AC adapters / Kensington Pilot Mini BT Mouse

802 what?!? I Use EVDO every day and it rocks, man!

As I stated in the first post, I am already accounting for the hibernation file and pagefile.

If by "hibernation reserve", you mean something different from hiberfil.sys, I'd be curious to learn more.

By "system recovery", do you mean the IBM partition? If so, then I don't think that's the answer because the 39.5 GB of used space I quoted for the C:\ drive excludes the IBM partition (the total reported size of C: is smaller than the overall disk by about 5 GB -- that's the IBM partition).

Assuming I didn't misinterpret your response, I'm still perplexed as to what has happened to the other 10 GB.

If you go to xp disk management what shows up there, I don't have a t60 but I would imagine your hpa is more than 6gigs.

100 GB stated disk capacity, so ~93 GB in binary terms
C: 88.4 GB
IBM_Service: 4.7 GB

My question is: Of the 88.4 GB on C:, 39.5 GB is used according to Local Disk Properties (and XP Disk Management), but I can only account for 29.6 GB in terms of files and folders on that partition.

That 10GB is likely a ~10% setting in your System Restore options under System Properties.

Give that man a prize! 12%, 10.8 GB. Mystery solved.
Thanks!
