Which one should I get? Thinking of 17043DU
Am currently using a Win98 X20 that's on its second hard drive and last legs. Rather than patch it up again I decided to get a z60T but sent it back because I thought it was too big, the screen was too dark and the keyboard was a bit too "clicky" for my tastes. So, on to an X60. What I want it for:
-Web & e-mail primary
-Some photoshop secondary
-Wi Fi connectivity at home and when I travel (hot spots okay, not looking for EVDO card)
-Some photo and music storage, not a ton
-Want to get something that will run Vista when it finally comes out
-Lightweight, long battery life
-basic Office apps
That leads me to an x60s with the L2400 processor, which I think gives me better battery life? Going to get the 60GB machine since that will do for me, but fill it with 1.25GB RAM (max offered on Lenovo site for 17043DU model). I don't really want the fingerprint reader or Verizon built-in access. I'd like bluetooth but not necessary.
So, all in all I'm looking at the 17043DU with RAM upgrade and Office Basic. Was thinking of buying some inexpensive 3rd party USB CD/DVD reader for when I need that, rather than getting the ultrabay since I never use the ultrabay for my X20 other than reading CD-ROMs.
That seem about right? Anything I'm missing or should be aware of?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Seems like you should be set. I should be getting mine in the mail soon.
On a side note, this is the usb combo drive I bought to go along with my x60s. It's a great price, and Lacie is usually a high quality drive, but I'll update you when I get it in the mail. It's the lowest priced usb drive I managed to find, unless of course you want to go for the full blown desktop-sized one.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827187032
Good luck with your x60!
*Almost forgot, If you want to save even more cash, you may want to check out open office.
http://www.openoffice.org/
It's just like MS Office, but Open Source...not to mention free. It recognizes all the ms file types (.doc, .xls, etc) and can save to them as well. I think it's a great alternative, especially if you're on a budget like I am.

I didn't think Photoshop ran on machines with only XGA resolution?Blueblazer wrote: ...

Seriously, I guess it is only secondary and depends on what you are trying to do... If you're only retouching photos, should be fine.

Thanks NJ_IT. I ordered that exact model from costcentral tonight. I can't wait.
Including the ultrabase, the price was still cheaper than the stock Lenovo price!
Unfortunately it was not possible to customize the laptop. I would have upgraded to a 7200rpm drive. I didn't feel it was worth the extra money to buy the extra 7200rpm drive.

Me neither.I have SATA 5400rpm Harddrive and 7200rpm,and tried to compare those drive in my X60s.
7200rpm performance increased only ~10% than 5400,and also increased power consumption around 10% in average.
So it looks 5400 is enough performance for X60s.

Wow.. sorry to hear that. Where did you order from?Blueblazer wrote:Move date now April 28. This game is no fun!
I placed my order for my X60s 17043DU on Satuday from CostCentral.com. Today I had to call them to verify shipping address. I guess it's their standard policy if shipping doesn't match billing address.
Anyways, it shipped out today. I have tracking number, but it's not in the fedex system yet. If you ordered from elsewhere and the price isn't lower and there isn't a reason for ordering from that place, I'd suggest canceling and going with CostCentral.
I ordered RAM from zipzoomfly.com with Fedex 2 day shipping, and I think the X60s might actually arrive first even though it's only Fedex ground. The ram was ordered today, but hasn't shipped yet.
update: Fedex quotes 4/7/06 as the delivery date for the X60s.

Hi Blueblazer,
I placed an order with lenovo a couple days after your initial post and was in the same situation. Everyday I would check, the date would be moved back. I then called lenovo and cancelled my order. The rep on the phone suggested www.cdw.com. They seem to have your model in stock and will ship same day.
I then ordered from costcentral on April 2nd, had to scan ID and CC on April 4th, checked my mail this morning, April 5th and its on delivery to me today as we speak! I'm lucky that i'm next to their westcoast warehouse.

In the event you haven't ordered, Costcentral is cheaper by $100 for the price Gromet quoted. Also their ultrabase is cheaper than $200.Blueblazer wrote:OMFG moved to 5/2 now. I'm calling CDW as we get a corp discount there.
