T20 Warm Boot Freezes

#1 Post by gigzter » Mon Mar 27, 2006 3:57 pm

Have a Thinkpad T20 (P3/700/512mb/60gb) that locks up during restart (warm boot)
only. OS will begin to load and then freezes up after loading about 3/4's of progress
bar. Interestingly, pc will boot without any problems if shutdown first, and then
started (cold boot).

Background: This pc previously had Windows XP Pro on it and worked flawlessly. I
got an IBM full dock that contained a pci slot. Attempted to put a video card in
the pci slot to upgrade the video. Did get the pci video to work after loading drivers,
etc. but didn't like the fact that it basically killed my onboard S3 video driver
and would not allow me to play dvd's to an external monitor thru the docked pci video
card. Thus, I undocked the unit and restarted... At that time, WinXP locked during
reboot and hung at the Windows splash screen. WinXP would boot cold, but locked upon
warm boot.

Things that I've tried:
Ran comprehensive IBM PC diagnostics (floppy set) and all checks fine.
Ran extended disk check on hard drive and all checks fine.
Reseated memory.
Fdisked hard drive, reformatted, and did fresh install of Windows2000, still hangs
on restart or warm boot.
Adjusted bios settings to disable quickboot.
Installed Recovery Console, ran fixmbr, fixboot, and every other suggestion here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315396/en-us.
Used ccleaner to check registry problems and all is fine.
Reviewed programs and processes at start-up and nothing sticks out.
Reviewed event log and nothing appears out of place.
No IRQ device conflicts, all drivers are loaded properly and are functional.
Have run all patches and updates from both IBM and MS.
sfc /scannow - completed and no help.

I'm at a loss here. Something tells me there has to be a hardware failure but all tests that I've run have come up negative. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I had a T22 that one day stopped completing its soft-shutdown. I tried a bunch of driver stuff, up to reinstalling OS, and still, it would not shut down without a five-second press on the powerswitch. Finally, I pulled the miniPCI network card, and voila, problem fixed.

If you haven't yet, try pulling individual cards, RAM, etc. Maybe one of them is getting hung up on restart?

the minipci was a thought. I haven't pulled it yet in case anyone else had other thoughts. Reason being, I had one awful time getting the card seated properly in the first place and cringed the thought of pulling it (is the ethernet/56k combo version). I attempted to reseat the minipci but I couldn't move it around enough to unseat the pins without totally taking it out. May have to pull it anyway just for argument's sake.

Even if it IS the minpci - why would it freeze the system during warm boot and not freeze the system during a cold boot?

Hmm, I dunno what the differences are exactly between cold and warm boot, other than if you have extended memory test set up.

Not sure if win2000 has this option (I know that XP does), but have you tried looking through the Event Viewer under ControlPanel/Adminstrative Tools for any highlighted problems/errors?

i pulled the minipci card and it will restart correctly without locking up. Putting the minipci back in - the machine will correctly cold boot and once again lockup during restart. Changed the settings within bios for diagnostic/quick boot and still locks with either setting during restart. I guess the verdict is, leave the minipci card in (it still works perfectly) and have to shutdown completely during any updates etc. versus using restart or pull the card altogether to regain the usage of restart.

Stupid thing is....i still don't understand why it would lock up during restart and not lockup from a cold boot. If I enter the bios, then hit F10 and allow it to restart that way, it doesn't lock up either...

What about after hibernation/standby?
