Extra USB port for t21?

#1 Post by renhui » Tue Mar 28, 2006 2:22 am

As part of my work on adding internal usb bluetooth to my t21, I realized that t21 natively supports two usb ports, the one we have and another hidden and unwired. (if you check usb hub properties in Device Manager, you will see two usb ports show up). I took the laptop apart and located the right chipset and maybe the correct pins, however, being an occasional solderer, I really doubt I could handle soldering in such small area, but I am sure the second usb can be located in the docking station connector area as the dock supports two usb ports. So my question is, has anyone done this before? I would really love to have the unwired usb port available.
Thank you very much.

Another way would be, to use the I/O card from a T23, with 2 ports. They are 20 bucks shipped on eBay. I think, I will try this on my T22... Any reason why is shouldn't work?

IBM TP T41p (1.7G/1GB/100GB-7k100/DVD-CDRW/SXGA+/BT)
IBM TP T22 (900/512/40/DVD/CDRW/14")
IBM TP A31 (1.8GHz/512MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/15" SXGA)
For sale: n/a
WTB: n/a

This second usb-port is the IBM ultraport!

It's on the top of your display. there you can plug in the IBM ultraport-camera or bluetooth ect..

http://www.sundigi.com/files/images/lib ... X30053.jpg

the ultraport is a usb-port with just another socket.

so the T20,21,22 has two usb-ports and the T23 has three!

But the ultraport features 13 pins instead of 4 for standard USB?

Where can you buy the cameras and accessories that fit into the top port?

Wonderful.

Just wonderful these Thinkpads!

If my thinkpad ever comes and I figure out how to replace the motherboard without breaking anything I will have a thinkpad T20.

I have a compulsive tendency to read everything I can find on a product before and after I buy it so I know EVERYTHING about it.

And for this topic... linux wiki to the rescue!

I want to see if I can buy any broken Ultraport device so I can integrate a USB wifi card into it. Mm that sounds fun.

Curosity, will a PCMCIA usb card and wifi card fit at the same time?
