HDD/OS swap between T22 & T23

#1 Post by starbork » Tue Mar 28, 2006 5:33 pm

Hey all,

When I take the cleanly-XPsp2-installed HDD from a T23 and plug it into a fully funtional T22, the following occurs:

- POST ok
- XP "white bar" load ok
- XP "scan peg" screen starts up and BOOM
BSOD, advising that there is a problem with the hard disk and to check for possible viruses.

This behavior occurs when taking a clean T22 HDD and plugging into a T23 as well. This behaviour does not occur taking the same T23 HDD and plugging into another T23.

Any insights? I know the system bus speed is different, but shouldn't Windows see this as a motherboard upgrade or the like, and cope with it?

Thanks!

Driver issue.

The fix is to run an XP repair install (as I recall, boot from the XP CD, check the install option (not repair from console), it will search for an installed OS, and then ask if you want to repair the existing install or do a clean install. Choose the repair. After the repair install, all of your settings and all will be the same, but no BSOD. I had to do this when moving my HD from a T22 to a T23.

Also, you will want to install IBM T23 drivers for some stuff, video and audio for example, or vice versa.

Interesing, I will try that. Glad to hear that it's at least possible to port a HDD. It would be great if WinXP would keep those other drivers handy so that it could recover from going between chassis-- allowing HDD transfers between T22<-->T23 at will-- without a repair each time.

That's an interesting point. After the repair install, put the drive back in the T22 and let us know what happens.

Well, it did work to an extent: the Repair job managed to get the HDD up and running with non-system files intact. However, for the purposes of cold-swapping chassis on the fly, I wouldn't really consider the operation a success, for the reasons detailed below.

The "Repair" operation apparently consists of deleting all drivers and updates, then laying a fresh install under your existing files of whatever version of XP you have on your installation volume. Which is fine, if you just need to get to the files. But having all the drivers etc blown away basically lobotomized my XP install :) Status of the T22 HDD after the chassis swap into a T23 and an XP "Repair" job:

- Now will hang at "loading your personal settings" phase of boot for about 90 seconds
- AVG antivirus is corrupt and needs to be reinstalled
- All windows updates have been rolled back to raw XP SP1 install CD
- All drivers have been rolled back to whatever was on XP SP1 install CD, if any

On the plus side, all my files are indeed there, so in an emergency, there IS a procedure to transplant chassis between T22 and T23, and assumedly vice-versa.

Sadly, this does not allow quick "cold-swapping" of chassis to suit the weather / terrain / performance req's of the task at hand, etc.

I'll continue to explore other options for those of us with both T22s and T23. Further ideas/suggestions welcome.

- Has the hanging gone away? I don't recall experiencing this more than once, maybe not even then.
- Same thing happened to me with AVG
- I also lost downloaded XP updates (I forgot about that)
- Don't know about the drivers - all of my non-XP drivers still seemed to be there (actually, I guess that was just my wireless card).

Anyway, your experience sounds pretty much like mine.

If you have to swap the drive regularly (for whatever reason...), you should create a second partition with a second Windows installation.

IBM TP T41p (1.7G/1GB/100GB-7k100/DVD-CDRW/SXGA+/BT)
IBM TP T22 (900/512/40/DVD/CDRW/14")
IBM TP A31 (1.8GHz/512MB/40GB/DVD-CDRW/15" SXGA)
For sale: n/a
WTB: n/a

Except that in that case you have to have dual installs of most of the software.... But true, nontheless.

Interesting suggestion... an possibly I could get away with having 3 partitions:

1 - T22 OS/drivers
2 - T23 OS/drivers
3 - Program files shared between p1 and p2.

Although by this point, it is probably more effort and overhead than it's worth. Mainly, I just wanted to be able to migrate my primary HDD between whatever chassis is at hand or in the best shape at the moment.

Well, other projects await. Thanks for the great suggestions folks :)
