Removing WWAN antenna

#1 Post by astro » Tue Mar 28, 2006 5:48 pm

Hey all,

With the sale prices on Lenovo US at the moment, I am considering buying a T60 through Bill. [They still don't have the SXGA+ models in Australia yet! Aargh! And I have EPP too... Double Aaaaargh!!]

However, the Verizon/Sierra WWAN is useless to me in Aus., which is not a big deal, however I would like to remove the antenna which sticks out from the side of the lid... Is that possible? Or is the lid housing actually different for the WWAN models (so there would be a gaping hole there)?

Thanks,
Astro

P.S. I don't know why I am so desperate to buy a T60 -- my R40 has been very solid for the last 2.5 years -- but I think lurking on this forum is a MAJOR contributing factor. :D

Well, this is completely unbiased opinion....

Buy from Bill! :D

OK, that said...

I think the WWAN antenna is pretty much part of the frame on the T60s that have it. There will very likely be a gaping hole there if you try to take it out. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

It is soooo tempting... :D The prices seem really good -- ~US$2k for a 2GHz SXGA

<rant>
Lenovo people are keeping mum about if/when SXGA+ will arrive in Aus, which makes me think it may be a strategy to either move as much T4x stock as possible, or (probably) so as not to detract from the demand in the US and Europe. In which case it could be up to 2-3 months before they are available here. Which is a real kick in the pants when the US now has them ON SALE, presumably because they have sufficient stock to do this (I don't know how this makes sense).

Anyway, it seems there is a little panel which covers the place where the WWAN antenna would be. I don't know if you could actually buy that separately...

Yeah, my 200762U, which does not ship with the WWAN, does have a little cover where the WWAN would be (like in the photo). So it seems like the LCD frame housing is the same for all models. But, I too wonder if you'd be able to get the cover. Worth calling IBM parts or technical support and asking?

Taking a quick look at the ThinkPad Maintenance Manual, I don't see the cover there.
