this is the best deal you can get on a T60. even better than the student discount. i should have bought this. remember, this comes w/ the Verizon card included.

I was very curious about this laptop. I saw it yesterday at that price and I thought that somthing must be wrong.

I was discussing this on another forum HERE

Go to This link and hit "Continue."
Look to the left side of the page where it shows the configuration and "display."

I was told that the display in this configuration (14.1 inch SXGA+ IPS (1400x1050) TFT Display with wide viewing angle and high density display) is actually a mistake and it should not be labeled as an IPS.

It might actually be an IPS screen which could account for the $2949.00 price tag (now on sale for $2099.00) when compared to the 2623D7U model (also a 14.1" with almost the exact same specs) here:

Look to the left side of the page where it shows the configuration and "display."

As you can see, the 14.1" screen on this model says "14.1 inch SXGA+ (1400x1050) TFT" which differs from the original model I showed you (the top link).

The price comparison of these two:

$1,999.00 (web price $2,299.00) --------> machine with same specs as the first machine I showed you, except 512 RAM instead of 1 GB standard

and

$2,099.00 (web price $2,949.00)

Doesn't that seem off - that a machine with the same exact specs except 512 mb less RAM makes a difference of $650 web price, and $200 current sale price?

It would make a lot of sense if it was not a mistake and the more expensive 14.1" model was in fact a IPS wide viewing angle high density TFT screen.

However, if you have a way of confirming that it is not an IPS screen and is in fact a mistake it would be very very appreciated

If it was a mistake then the prices should be fixed.

IBM/Lenovo don't sell 14.1" IPS screens. IPS is 15" only.

Do you have any concrete evidence to back that up?

IPS is not only 15.0", IPS is not limited to 15 inch LCD screens...now whether they actually sell 14.1" IPS screens is a different story, and if you do not have any concrete evidence that they do not use one on that specific model then you should be open to the possibility until some concrete evidence appears

How do you account for the very LARGE difference in price I mentioned?

No, you're right, I don't have concrete evidence to back that up.

Only the following:
- IBM/Lenovo have not, in recent times, sold a 14.1" IPS screen. I'm pretty sure everyone on this forum will back me up on that one. *fingers crossed*
- No-one that has currently received a T60/p with 14.1" SXGA+ has posted that it is an IPS screen to this forum.
- If you look in IBM's Personal Systems reference (tabook.pdf) you will note that only 15" screens (SXGA+ and UXGA) are referred to as having IPS technology.

So, unless Lenovo have changed their tune since they released the last tabook (21 March '06), then all 14.1" 'IPS' screens are a typo. I am not saying that IPS technology is limited to 15" screens. In fact, I argue the very point in this thread. Sorry it came out that way.

Furthermore, the points I have listed above can be gleaned from reading the rest of the posts in this forum. This isn't a really big forum (Only gained momentum in the last 2 months), so that shouldn't take long, and more's the point, there is some fascinating insight into the way people use their T60 and the considerations they made before purchasing.

Now, regarding the price differences, the "TopSeller program" models (renamed from "ThinkExpress"), 2623-### are for some reason reduced pricing, though they offer the same features as the full-priced 2007-### models. A lot of people think that this is to screw the resellers over, I personally don't know why, all I know is that you can get a decent spec machine for cheap.

I too have never heard of a 14.1" thinkpad having IPS. Interestingly, the only 14.1" T series they have had that IPS technology displayed (maybe mistakenly) is on that specific model number, the one that had a web price of $2,949.00 and is on sale for $2,099.00). That price substantial price difference between the models ($650) with almost the exact same specs ( 512 vs 1 gb RAM) cannot be justified unless there is something different about the model listed as IPS.

I did look in the tabook they released and you are right about them not have and 14.1" IPS.

I know, I have read so much about thinkpads lately it is rediculous, and it is understood that there is no such thing as a 14" IPS screen by Lenovo.

Yep, this is some kind of special sale with ridiculously cheap pricing, so cheap that I am trying to buy one through Bill and get him to send it to Australia where those models are not even f*&*ng available yet, let alone at sale prices.

And about the warranties Lenovo offers, are any of them worthwhile? I know it comes with a 3-year base warranty but are any of the upgradable warranties worth the cash?

And about the AC/DC cables they offer for like $100, can you get those somewhere for cheaper?

1. No, no... I am not going to contradict myself after writing that long email before!

All I'm saying is that for whatever reason, Lenovo marked the price down. It is very cheap, even undercuts the other model(s) as you pointed out. Let's not forget that Thinkpads in general are not a cheap laptop. Lenovo are making a pretty good margin, I would think. Don't be too surprised if the price drops a lot, they are still making money off you.

2. I would think that you could get some sort of education discount, though I have no idea how you go about this. Furthermore, you should read the "Rules of the Road" (the top sticky post in this forum) and see what it has to say about discount plans and discussing them on the forum.

3. Bill Morrow is the guy who sponsors/runs this web site. You will see him comment from time to time. Bill is a reseller I think and many people on this forum have bought laptops through him and seem to be pleased. You should be able to contact him at bill@thinkpads.com, or just go to www.thinkpads.com and have a look around the main site for a phone number (though I think the main site hasn't been updated in a while). Bill seems to be pretty busy these days, so I am hoping like hell he has time to order the 2007-64U for me, because I will never be able to get it at that price in Aus. That said, I think you should leave him alone too... j/k

I think you need to do some searches before asking these questions dude... Lenovo warranty is considered among the best, but don't take my word for it.

I was asking about the warranties because I looked all over Lenovo's site to find exactly what the warranties covered but I could not find exactly what I was looking for. I just wanted some feedback on the upgraded warranties that people have bought. I know it comes standard with a fantastic warranty but the onsite might be worth it and I was wondering what others have experienced regarding these upgrades. I might consider one myself.

There is no 14.1" IPS. IPS is available only on 15" displays. If you see a 14.1" advertised with IPS, it's an error.

I just bought one and am going to return the 200755U I bought less than one month ago. The price difference is only 300$, and I got more juice from this deal.

Although the 200755U has IPS 15 inches screen, but with other options, I can live with 14 inches without IPS.
