CPU Temperature over 80 C normal?
CPU Temperature over 80 C normal?
Hi Everyone-
I am getting fairly concerned about my CPU temp. My computer sometimes randomly turns off and I wonder if it could be due to this. I have a 1.8 GHz T42p with 1GB RAM and I have never seem my CPU drop below 75. It normally is around 80-86 degrees C (measured using mobile meter). Is this normal? It is at 82 right now and all I have running is IE, Word, and Outlook. My CPU has been around 25% for the last 20 minutes or so. Should I be concerned and call IBM? I would really appreciate any help. I keep on reading about people with temps in the 40s. Thanks,
-Dan

Hi,
This is not normal. Your CPU should reach about 75-80 only when running full speed (100%) for a while, but the TP with a dothan 1.8Ghz should idle at around 45º. No more. If you're getting such high temps when idle (check the CPU graphs again), then either the heatsink/fan is not correctly seated, or not working properly, or just plain dirty, or the temp sensor is not working OK.
Re. your CPU, it will not be harmed by high temps. These CPUs throttle down when over 90º and switch down at around 100º, before they are damaged...

You should be idling in the range of 38-41 degrees; I am goi ng to bet that there is something wrong with your cooling system in that case. 80 degrees should only be reached after a period of intense activity on the part of the CPU.

She does the things you do.

Check unwanted processes..
There must be some junk running.. before you call IBM make sure there is no spy junk running...
Right now it is running on super battery saver which has the CPU speed "very slow." I do have alot of processes running (around 100) but I am pretty sure no spyware or anything since I run for those very often with a variety of problems. Could my abnormally high number of processes be accounting for this? I know it is more than normal but I didn't think they would cause this, especially since the CPU is still around like 5-6% right now.

Hello Dan,
I've seen this having a winword.exe instance stuck in some weird state for a while, it was on my job's laptop (d610 pm 2ghz).
I definitly have the task manager run and minimized at my first application during every session, so I can check cpu usage in the task bar easily.
You clearly state that you were only using ie, outlook + word, so I would say that when once one of theses process is stuck and use 100% cpu time constantly (maybe javascript or plugin in ie, or some similar problems that occurs in outlook or word) it's pretty fast to get you cpu really hot.
If it occurs again (it may for various reasons), I simply kill the faulty app in the task list.

But didn't he say his CPU is at a few percent for the most part.
May seem obvious, but is the fan on at all during this time? do you hear it running?

6457-5KU (T61p) - Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 200GB HDD, 24x DVD, 15.4" WUXGA TFT, nVIDIA Quadro FX570M, Card Reader, Intel 4965AG, Windows Vista Ultimate
I was able to temporarily solve the problem by creating a new power profile and setting the CPU speed to "adaptive." This has worked at causing the cpu to go to only about 600MHz most of the time instead of 1800 and the CPU temp is now at about 50C with it running at about 5%. I think I will give IBM a call after hearing these responses. Thanks again!
