Getting no response in Windows forum. Re: ATI Catalyst CC

When I launch the ATI Catalyst Control Center, it shows the startup banner and then hangs (just the program, not Windows). I am still able to run at native resolution (1400x1050) just fine and adjust DPI.

I did a clean install on my T60 (with ATI Radeon x1400), and the first thing I did after loading the chipset support was to install the video drivers. After that, on every boot, I would get an error "cli.exe application failed to initialize properly". This is because .Net Framework was not installed. After installing .Net Framework v2.0, the error went away, but I am still unable to launch ATI CCC.

Any thoughts? Do I need to install .Net Framework BEFORE installing the video drivers? Or is the sequence unimportant and is the problem that I am using .Net v2.0 instead of v1.1?

I think you caught the problem yourself, ATI CCC uses the 1.1 .NET framework.

If you're right (quite possibly -- .Net 2.0 was only released this month, I think), that is really annoying, because the latest version of NHC runs on .Net 2.0.

Agreed. I've got both frameworks installed becuase I work with both, but most people won't be so, err, _lucky_.

I think MS screwed up big time on this. .NET 2.0 should have been backwards compatible with 1.1, just like 1.1 was with 1.0. I suppose you have to purge out the old stuff once in a while, but 2.0 just wasn't a radical enough change to warrant it yet.

BTW, does NHC work for you? As soon as I ran it I got a blue screen (IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN error). It shocked the hell out of me the first time, becuase I have NEVER seen a .NET app cause a system halt before.

I assume you want to know if NHC works on my T60... I'll be sure to let you know once I have one.

NET 2.0 is pretty much entirely seperate in terms of functionality from NET 1.1; 2.0 now has full 64-bit support and a complete rework of the API and hosting API, also meant to work better with the Microsoft SQL server (suprise!) and generally a, very vague at best, relationship with the WinFX platform....Which I am sure we will see in the versions of Vista that Microsoft ships then "works on" whilst it is already a final product installed on our systems.

I posted asking about this BSOD a few days ago. When my machine had the stock installation NHC worked fine. With my own completed installation NHC blue screened. I rolled back to a ghost I made while reinstalling everything that does not have any extra drivers and NHC works fine. I am not really sure where the problem lies.

NHC doesnt seem to be the most useful right now anyway. It wont control the fan on my T60, it wont let me overclock my X1400 and it lets me set voltages and speeds, but it seems to ignore the voltages.

Just to close the loop for anyone else who runs into this issue - ATI CCC does need .NET Framework v1.1 and will not work solely with .NET v2.0.
