Got My X41T

#1 Post by Rovers3 » Thu Mar 30, 2006 9:32 am

So Last week i received my new X41T.
I changed from a T43.
So my T43 was a nice unit. Wifi. 1.86 Ghz. 1 gig of ram, 14 inch 1400x1050 screen, 80 gig Hard drive.
I liked it but the battery life was ok not great and it was heavier than i wanted (Travel alot).
So right before a trip I switched to a X41T. Well all i have to say is WOW. What a great Laptop/Tablet. It had all the goodies and a 60 gig drive.
Ok i did find the drive a little slower but once you remove 90% of the non essential IBM garbage (the ThinkVantage stuff seems faster) it was ok for speed. The Batttery lasted a 5 hour flight no problem with at least an hour left over, i alwasy close mine into standby. The Ablilty to use Tablet mode on the Airplane is priceless. What a differance when your seat tray in in your stomach (the seat in front is leaned back....gotta love cattle class) and you can just flip into Tablet mode.
Also working at Home in bed or on the deck or anywhere, tablet mode is great.
I work in IT and am an extreme power user on my Laptop and i have only 1 regret when i switched. That is the Display resolution. It was nice to have the 1400x1040 and to go to 1024x768 is a little hard, but the trade off is totaly worth it. Will i switch back...no way.

Great to hear

I am waiting on an x41 tablet... Wow they take a long time to get!

I'm switching from a fantastic T42p. The only problem is that it's just too big to travel with and take on the train every day to and from work. The size of an X, along with the battery life should be a great thing.

For what it's worth, I expect the X41 tablet will drive a big display when at a desk, though not with DVI like a T-series. Still, it looks pretty good.

Hopefully the tablet functionality will be as good as I hear. I've heard mixed reviews. Some people love it and others don't seem to care.

How does the screen look? How does it compare to a standard laptop screen?

The Screen is brighter than my T43 that is for sure.
I like it. Teh Tablet part is very good and very responsive. I am comparring this to PDA's as i have never had a Tablet PC before (other then a Actualy Tablet pad).

I hooked up an external 20" LCD to it and it ran fine at 1600x1200 so i am sure that should be good for most people.

I got mine few days ago, and not very happy with its hard drive, way too slow and clicking noise.
Anyone know where I can get a faster 1.8 inches drives? Please advice.
Thanks

The X41 Tablet screen is fantastic. It's an IPS screen, just like Flexview on the 15" T-series. However, the digitizer cover seems to blur and muffle it a bit.

I don't think there are 1.8" drives over 4200RPM.

Yes it is a little slower, but removing 90% of the IBM garbage and I setup and ran Perfect Disk, now it is much faster, not as fast as the t43 i had, but then this is not designed for the same use.

PefectDisk is excellent - I've noticed a reasonable increase in 'responsiveness' after using. I tend to let it do a Smart Placement defrag at least once a week. Highly recommended.

And yes, stuck with 4200rpm 1.8" drives for now. The new X60T might use the 2.5", however, so the bottleneck should be reduced.

When is the 60X tablet supposed to be announced? Will it ever?

Any chance that the next generation of the tablet will use solid state drives? That would probably speed things up, especially compared to the 4200 RPM drives.

How hot does the 41 tablet get during normal use? Anything to the point of being too hot to hold?

Does the HDD make much noise during use?

Is it comfortable using the tablet to take notes for extended periods (1-2hrs)? Is it difficult getting used to taking notes on the tablet? Could you see someone completely ditching paper notes in favor of the tablet? Can it output a 1920X1200 resolution?

I'm strongly considering getting an X41 tablet or it's upgrade before fall of this year, so your answers will be a big help to me.

Love the X41T

#10 Post by burtonman » Mon Apr 17, 2006 6:43 am

I switched from a T42p, great laptop, but too big and heavy for a lot of commuting.
The 60GB drive in this one is a LOT quieter than the 40GB I had in a borrowed X41. I almost can't hear it.

The screen is great, and I use it with OneNote. Amazing with the tablet. It can search my handwriting, even if I don't recognize it to text.

All in all, I miss the 7200rpm drive from time to time, but the weight and tablet functionality more than make up for it.
