recurring pressure spots?
hey people!
all right, i've recently purchased a t20 with white, pressure spots (knowingly) and at first i didn't mind them so much but lately i've been thinking about replacing the lcd. i know this problem is caused by pressure from the cover on the back of the lcd. the infamous pyramid grid pattern from the inside of the case is clearly evident in the marks. basically i am just wondering if i purchase a new lcd and a replacement cover how likely are the spots to recur?
some questions:
1) is the pyramid grid design on the inside of the cover utilized on newer models (ie. the r50, etc?)
2) is it "safe" to perhaps put something thin (a metal plate or foam sheet or something) between the lcd and the grid?
3) owners of new/prestine t20s, assuming i get a new lcd panel and lcd cover, is closing the case with one hand on the top lid enough to create marks?
any answers to any of the questions would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Re: recurring pressures spots?
Funny that you mention this. That "grid" was what I had to shave down to get an i1400 LCD to fit into a T20, without pressing the back of the LCD and creating a liquid effect.jb_007clone wrote:2) is it "safe" to perhaps put something thin (a metal plate or foam sheet or something) between the lcd and the grid?

Cushioning works only if there is nothing sharp impacting the lid, but rather a large area is affected by continuous pressue.

thanks for the info so far guys. basically all i want to know at this point is if it's worth it to purchase a new lcd panel + lid if the problem stands a good chance of happening again. this is my first thinkpad and i don't know what sort of punishment the previous owner put it through but i can assure you i won't be slamming the thing shut or anything. will the spots return with normal use?
or should i just save up and buy a new r series model or something so i am guaranteed that the spots won't be an issue?

i took a pair of pliers and a dremel and tore that crap out of the new T20 series lid i bought for my T23, which did not have those. now it looks new and doesnt make the screen look as if something is pushing it every time i move the lid.

becuase the T20 lid was NIB and IBM charges over 250 bucks for that. I didnt feel like waiting and searching for a NIB T23 lid, haha... NIB lids rarely, if ever, pop up on ebay, so it was a rare opertunity to return my T23 to like new condition

Are the pressure spots you speak of similar to this?

If I open my LCD, and grind that area down will it fix it?

The pressure spots are what everyone on Ebay calls "keyboard pressure spots," even though they are caused by the LCD cover.
I have noticed, as has been mentioned, the T23 doesn't have the raised grid, like the T20-22 does.
One other thing you should watch for, the T23 LCD cover, with the wireless antenna inside, is a WEE bit larger. Not enough to notice, unless you try to install a non-wireless LCD bezel on a wireless cover. Just barely enough, so the 2 don't fit correctly.
Yes, I have taken a pair of dykes to the grid on the cover, as well.
