7K100: Bad firmware flash

#1 Post by Cloud! » Thu Mar 30, 2006 5:26 pm

I just bought a Hitachi 60GB 7K100 drive, to upgrade my TP, and I got the infamous 2010 error. I read these two topics (which is the same procedure)

http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20858
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=20944

I then went on to flash my drive, but unfortunately I didn't read it carefully enough, especially this part "Part A: Guide for updating retail harddisks except Hitachi 5K100/7K100 series".

I flashed my drive using Part A, which means I used the firmware from the cd-image, an not the "modded" floppy-image. And of course it didn't work out. In fact my drive is now totaly dead. It doesn't get recognized in bios or in an usb-box. In fact it doesn't even spin up in the external box (attached to another pc). I've tried to use the floppy-image, but to no avail, since the drive isn't found.

Now I know it's my own fault for being stupid (reminds myself to read instructions thoroughly, before attempting that again), but is there any chance I can get it to work again?

I'd expect only the manufacturer can at that point. Bios, Firmware updates can be ugly if they go wrong.

That kinda sucks.

I've heard of other devices being reflashed in that state... but never a hard drive.

You could go ahead and try to re-flash it with the manufacturer's firmware if you can get ahold of it.

Thanks for your reply. I think your right Digital. It's probably only the manufacturer that can help me at this point.

Christopher -> I don't think that would work, since the flashing progam cant find the drive, but I can try again today.

I can try to send it back, and say it didn't work when I got it. It's not very nice of me, but I think it's my only option. I just wanted to post here to see, if anyone had a magical way of saving my drive.

Hardly relevant as there actually was life before television. My use of the phrase predates "Family Guy" episodes by several decades. The history of the term itself, in general, predates television and is a Bowdlerized version of the original phrase!

From "Word Origins": Screw the Pooch

"The phrase screw the pooch, meaning to mess up, commit a grievous error, was made famous in Tom Wolfe's book The Right Stuff. The phrase is a euphemism from US military slang. The original expression was f**k the dog and meant to waste time, to loaf on the job."

Screw the pooch is a handy phrase to describe someone who has FUBAR'ed!

I say RMA the drive and get a replacement. Either that or return it to the store (if within 15 or 30 day window) and get a replacement. that's what the policy is for. I see if done with bad motherboard flashes all of the time.

I don't know if they [manufacturer] can fix them or if these replacements are just built into the price and thus passed on to everyone. Either way do what you need to do.

Though I suspect they can reflash them. Heck, people RMA stuff because they can't set the jumpers right.

No, the "policy" is for DOA devices, not for cases of homicide!

There are so many ne'er-do-wells out there who think as you that most of the major retailers have cracked down on RMAs, much to the chagrin of honest folks.

Indeed... they often don't honor legitimate claims because of stuff like that.

I have yet to see the manufacturers discriminate between the two. Or at least I haven't seen too many denied claims. This is for both consumer and enterprise gear.

Well, I wasn't really referring to the manufacturers, I was referring to the retailers.

The manufacturers can afford to eat the drives and write them off to maintaining good PR. The retailers often wind uo having to eat the drives personally.

When zipzoomfly.com was still googlegear.com they had one of the best "no questions asked" return policies on the street. Gamers and overclockers took advantage of this to such an extent that it bit googlegear in the [censored].

Now, this is what they've come to: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/PolicyConfirm.jsp

Well if I was going to return the drive, it would go directly to Hitachi. The retailer wants you to RMA it to them. But thanks for all the answers, even though I didn't get my drive to work.
