faulty hdd?! x40 hdd clicking...WHEN OFF!!!!

#1 Post by dorin » Fri Mar 31, 2006 12:48 am

hi there,

i noticed that as soon as i got the new hdd (HTC426040G9AT00) i noticed that when the laptop its off, and i flip it on any other side, the hdd its making a noise, like the heads are going from one side to another.

is that normal?! shoulndt this be very dangerous for movement (ie. running after bus) ?!?!

thanks,

dorin

ps: in rest it pases all the tests with no pb!

You mean that you hear a clicking sound when you move the X40 from side to side when it is off? If so, this was reported in a thread awhile back.

The armature of the HDD is ramped off the platters and locked into position. You would have to have *really* sensitive hearing to hear the jiggling in the tiny tolerance through the case and ambient noise.

the noise come in the area where the hdd is and it comes only when its off. searched but couldnt find what you meant (the only one which i recall some time ago was with the noise from side to side like a lost screw or so)

i wonder that could it be?

Perhaps the 1.8" Toshiba HDDs in the X4X Series Thinkpads use slightly loosed tolerances and a ramp region that is father away from the platters? That doesn't make sense though since I would think that they would want to utilize space as much as possible.

I will look into this a bit and check out some of the Whitepapers for that Toshiba drive.

Wow...Good job on that; search button comes in handy doesn't it?

Good thing is, now even I know what causes it...Learn something new every day I guess. :0
