R52 hard drive install, using a different brand ?

#1 Post by - indi jey » Fri Mar 31, 2006 11:29 pm

What exactly does it intale to use a different brand hard drive in my r52, recently purchased the laptop to be used for a high demand application, It demands a 7200 rpm drive at a minimum, I would rather put the money into a name brand other that lenvo (ive found better price's). What will it intale to do so and what should I look for as far as connections. Is it even feasible. ?

And are there any limitations to where the laptop will not run a esata drive using and esata card at 3.0 gbs ?..

Please excuse the ignorance, i am new to the laptop game, used my desktops for this application in the past, trying to get my head around the laptops limitations before i am stunned with them ..

Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

Well, the 7200RPM drive in that R52 is probably the fastest you can get it; the drive is most likely an IBM/Hitachi drive...Those are some of the best I have had next to the Seagates and have yet to have one fail on me. The R52 has an internal PATA-SATA bridge if I remember correctly. So you may run into the 2010 error (see the sticky in the T4X Series Forums) but I am not sure. If you get another Hitachi/IBM HDD, except for a few, you can reflash the firmware to get it to stop posting the 2010 Error. It might be more trouble that it is worth to pay for another HDD, take out the one that came with the R52, and install the new one for a marginal or negligible increase in speed.

I haven't tried eSATA on a laptop yet, so I can't say for sure. As long as you get something that works through an ExpressCard, which your R52 has a slot for...It should work.

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Cool, thanks just found a comparable ibm 7200 hardrive for a bit more, i figured I'd save my self the aggravation and just pay the man. I hate paying the man ...

Thanks for the fast response and warm welcome..
