T40p monitor problems

#1 Post by roberto223 » Sat Apr 01, 2006 4:49 am

At first bootup, the laptop screen becomes red. Then after a few seconds, it becomes normal and after one minute or two, it becomes complete black and barely visible. Using an external monitor, the display is normal at all the times, even at bootup. Now, my mind would go to the inverter, but the thing that worries me is the reddish color that appears on the screen at the first seconds of boot up. So there’s a change that the backlight could be damaged as well. Any help will be much appreciated

I've allready seen similar problems with other brand laptops (that was an hp), it got 'red eyes' at bootup, and sometimes the screen stayed blank while operating. I don't remind what the guy who have the unit has done, but I think the problem either come from the cable/nappe between the screen and the motherboard, or (less likely IMO) it will be due to a problem with the lcd itself.

If it have full warranty support, you may call IBM for them to fix the issue.

I also hope someone else will help you with this issue here... :(

Thank you for your reply. Do you exclude the possibilily of the lcd inverter being faulty? I was thinking about getting a new one to try, but then its a pitty to waste money on something that might not repair the laptop

Well if its the monitor i don't think that it's worth repairing. If it wasn't for the reddish letters at the first two-three seconds of boot-up, I would definately replace the lcd inverter. Is there a way to verify that the inverter is working fine?

Although I am not an expert in this area, I agree with xqw-fr. The backlight is basically a fluorescent lamp. Think of how fluorescent lamps behave, and how they eventually go bad. Seems simular to me. I think if it was the inverter, it wouldn't light at all.

Ah so it does seem like someone's had that before, is there an easy fix for that, or is it not worth the trouble/expense ?
