Port on top of T23 Screen?

#1 Post by BigWarpGuy » Tue Apr 04, 2006 1:02 pm

I found a port on the top of my T23 screen. Why is connected there? What device is connected to it? I saw it mentioned elsewhere but I have not found that post, yet. :?:

"Ultraport", there was a camera and some other devices that could connect to it.

I am curious as the hardware manual did not specify...
Does the motherboard have the header for the ultraport or is it part of the video connector?

I ask because if its realistic, normal pins (not some ribbon) I might go and use it for a second usb port. (when my thinkpad comes, I will need to replace the mobo so I will know then but for now im just curious)

There is a header that this ribbon cable plugs into on the motherboard / video card. The ribbon is sort of an X with one end going to the ultraport, a short segment going to the thinkpad light, another leg is to the LCD panel. On the other end, one side goes to the video connector and another leg that plugs onto the motherboard.

The connector that is use are 0.8mm pitch mounted onto a small stiffener card. You might be able to meter the connector to see what it connects to on the ultraport connector.

Hrmm okay thanks for the info. Too much stuff in that proximity for me to potentially short and fry. Maybe ill try to hunt down a BT ultraport device then hack in a wifi adapter instead. (BT is useles for me, but wifi is very useful)

Despite the fact that I have heard that the quality of the pics/video through the UltraPort camera are of such poor quality, I still want one. There is only one on eBay right now....and it has several bids, and not worth the cost of the current bid, IMHO.

ultraport on eBay

"IBM Thinkpad Ultraport Camera II FRU 02k5153"
It might be cheaper to buy an USB notebook comptuer plus a new one would come with a warranty.

Yeah, that was the only one that I saw on eBay. I know that the others are cheaper...I have a Logitech one that works great, but having one that is Original IBM equipment, and is made to sit on top of my screen would be nice to have....if for no other reason than nostalgia.
