What am I losing by going with a A20 or A20p?

T2x/T3x series specific matters only

Is it much bigger? Flimsier build?

I wonder what they were thinking as the specs. are remarkably close.

specs between a A20 and a T20 are the same. The only difference between the two is the weight and the additional floppy drive on the left side of the A series machines. The CD/DVD drives and the harddrive are interchangable between the two machines. The actual LCD panel are also the same. The T series was meant to be more portable while the A series was supposed to be more of a desktop replacement (meaning heavier), it had an optional heavy duty battery for longer life (not sure but I think it had 9 cells inside). Also interchangable were the recovery disks.

If you wanted a high resolution screen, then definitely go with a A2xP, this is the only way that you can get a 15" screen that is capable of 1600x1200. The best that you can do with a T series is 1400x1050. I had a A22P and it was great, I just sold it for $350

We have both an A30 and a T23 in our home right now. They are basically a "matched set" from a specification standpoint and like chan_man pointed out, it's basically a form-factor difference. But there are some details as well that seperate the two lines:

* The A30 has a 15" screen at XGA resolution which is 1 full inch larger than any of the T2x machines at the same or higher res. And she really likes this (kinda) feature, since things appear larger. She has bad eyes.
* The later As (A30&31) had two swappable bays which allow for a great deal of flexibility in drives you can have in the system. One of the bays is the enhanced ultrabay so there is some differences there as well, such as the ability to have a keypad or Palm/WorkPad C500/505 in there with the correct adapter.
* There were some workstation version of the As as well which along with higher res screens also had higher powered graphics subsystems.
* The Ts resided in the product line "flagship" position and as such were afforded some niceties. These included a standard 3 year warranty across the line during the early years, which implies a higher build quality. They were also built with the "Titanium Composite" top cover that had the unique rubberized coating on it. Whereas the As had a more pedestrian plastic shell.

That being said, we love both our machines; each in it's role and how there characteristics fit how we typically use them. My wife's A30 rarely leave the side table by her chair much less the house, whereas mine goes with me everywhere.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Are you comparing the A20m, A20p, A21m, A21p, A22m, A22p, etc. with each other or Did You Mean comparing the Aseries with the Tseries? Maybe I can help.
