The hard drive will fit in your T23. A new installation or repair of your OS could be necessary.

there are no conditionals, an OS reinstall will be necessary. the T22 uses the 440BX chipset and the T23 uses the 830MP, itll bluescreen on bootup.

You might, and I mean might as in a long shot, get away with starting in SAFE mode and letting the unit install all of the new drivers it will require, but you'll almost certainly need an OS cd.

If all you want to do is get some files off the HD, get a USB adapter for the HD (slow at USB1.1 speed!) or a second HD adaptor for the Ultrabay on the T23 (IDE fast!).

Orevin I saw that post but it was a bit too complicated for me to understand, esp since the t22 hd has 98se installed. I have xp pro and 98 to install on a new hd. I was trying to access some of the t22's software that has my registration keys on them - I wanted to make certain no one used my reg keys...
thanks!

get a USB adapter for the HD
do you mean an external hd enclosure? I have one for my 120G on my pc but recall seeing two sizes of enclosure. Will the enclosure I have house a notebook hd?? I am hesitant to get inside the TP cos I am returning it as soon as the call tag comes in. In examining the TP see a small crack in the corner that to me seems to have ocurred during the refurb process as there is no sign of impact. Knowing how easy it will be for TigerDirect to say I cracked it, took a bunch of photos of the unit to show that lack of impact hoping this will help against a claim by them. So, if I get inside the pc to remove the HD and something goes wrong I am totally screwed. What could go wrong? To ask that means you dont know me LOL.
thanks, nancy
Can I use the ethernet port to connect to TP to my Compac as a removeable drive??

Removing the harddrive will take all of 2 minutes.. remove the screw holding the tray (left side of laptop) and sliding out the cover/harddrive assembly. make sure the cover is open. There should be no indication of you doing this as long as you don't mess up the screw slot.

You will need to get a external enclosure made for a 2.5 inch drive (most laptop drives are 2.5 inch) These should run less than $20.00, I've seen some as low as $12.00. A drive enclosure made for desktop drives (3.5") will not work because the connector that will connect to the drive will be different.

HD enclosure vs ultrabay HD

#8 Post by nrphotos » Tue Apr 04, 2006 9:38 pm

thanks chan_man, thought so. Can the T2's upgrade to usb2.0? In that event shouldn't it be easier to use an enclosure rather than use the ultrabay?
On another note, I was able to download the driver for the 3.5 usb enclosure onto my TP22. Device mngr saw it as a mass storage device, saw the icon in the sys tray but never saw the drive letter in my computer. Any ideas why? One, the enclosure houses a 120G XP NTFS while the TP is a 98se FAT (I think)...
thanks, nancy
Guess I cant network the laptop to the pc without TP power huh... duh!

An upgrade to USB2.0 on a T2X machine requires a PC card solution.

There's very little difference in ease of use between an external HD adapter and the Ultrabay adapter.

WRT your 3.5" adapter not assigning a drive letter to the external HD, did you have the adapter's power supply connected at the time?

A USB port can't supply enough power to run a 3.5" HD.

yup powered on. I thought it might take a bit longer to use cos of the tp's 1.1 port but it just wouldn't assign itself. I heard the USB dadunk sound at plug-in and unplug but still no drive letter assignment. The enclosure came w/a driver cd, copied that to dvd & installed it.

2 things:

You can put the T22 drive in a T23se, under Win98, it will boot and start looking for drivers for the "new" hardware the OS wants to install. You will need the Win98 OS disk, plus the IBM T23 drivers to get stuff like video working at full res. I did this last weekend, so trust me.

It's a different story with XP, in that case the TP will blue screen and you have to run a repair install off the install CD to get things working.

As to USB, you have installed the usb drivers for the enclosure, right? Win98se needs drivers to run USB storage devices.
