Since there are some peeps in here with the T60p, I'm going a bit off-topic. But what are your battery times with the V5200? In different reviews I've seen significant battery life differences between the X1400 and the FireGL V5200. So whats yours
[/offtopic mode]
And back on topic, what are your 3D mark scores with the V5200?

How do you exactly install X1600 drivers?Kel Ghu wrote:... Try installing x1600 drivers instead of V5200 or Omega's ...
As far as I'm aware of there are three flavors of drivers for T60's:
Omega drivers - this is for the radeon series which also work for firegl's
ATI FireGL v series [from ati.com]
ATI Radeon [from ati.com]
My expirence so far with the gfx drivers has been terrible. The drivers that shipped with the t60p (made specifically for this model) would lock up and crash within 3 minutes of game play.
Then the drivers from ati.com (both ATI FireGL v series and radeon) would simply fail to install, saying hardware was not detected.
Only the Omega drivers have been able to install with these settings:
Chip Type: ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5200
Adapter Type: M56 GL
How did the out of the box drivers work for you?
Why have ati.com drivers failed to install? did they install for you?
What drivers do you use? and from where?
all puzzeling questions for me...
i've always disliked ATI drivers...
I don't have a t60p yet, but maybe this will help?
http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/files/DHmodtool3.exe
It will patch the ATI driver installation files so the driver will install and not stop when it cannot detect the card. I use this on my old notebook which has a no longer supported mobility card so I can run the lastest regular desktop catalyst drivers.
Works for me, may work for the t60p too. good luck
p.s. theoretically you can even edit the ini settings yourself of the driver install when you know your card ID number. I remember doing this to get the Fire GL drivers to install on my radeon x800 pro. was a bit tricky though.

are these from ati.com or the thinkvantage system update software?festher wrote:im using latest firegl driver on my v5200, so far no problems. ive played several hours COD2 single and multiplayer.
Driver version: 8.204.0.0
BIOS information: xxx-65001-001
b/c i did do the thinkvantage system update to get the latest drivers, and i still had crashes
btw,

the firegl v5200 or radeon x1600 is not on the supported list for the DH MODTOOL 3 tool
yeah I know it's not on the list. But so is the card in my current notebook. I wish I already had my t60p because I do want to try this myself
Did you give the program a try btw?
It's pretty straight forward. Install catalyst until it gives you the cannot detect video card message. then run dhmodtool and point it to the c:\ati directory the driver install created.
I can still try to find the info about editing the install inf and ini files into folling the installer to work in case nothing else works to get the catalyst drivers installed.

i belive i downloaded this one manually from lenovo:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-62841
If this driver, or the one for your model, dosent work, i would stop right there and send it back.

FAQ:
I tried Patje’s mod tool, it did not work with radeon drivers from ati.com + firegl v5200.
Only omega drivers have worked so far..
kwramm, if you'de be so kind...
can you give me some info on how to edit the inf/inf file in order to force install ati drivers?
good to see that my issue with the original drivers was normal (ibm's ati drivers causing my games to crash -- freaked me out btw)20) On my ATI VPU based ThinkPad I can’t set the resolution higher than 1280x1024 via the Dock/Mini Dock/Port Replicator’s DVI pass-trough port. What should I do?
For some unknown reason IBM’s ATI driver has this limitation. You can remove it and install Omega Driver, or use Patje’s Mobility Modding with the generic ATI Catalyst driver. Note, the generic ATI driver (with Patje's Mobility Modder) doesn’t support 1400x1050 resolution via DVI, Omega Driver does.
21) Using IBM’s ATI driver I have compatibility issues with some of my games. I really want to play these games. Is there a solution?
Remove IBM’s ATI driver, and use one of the drivers mentioned above.

I remember there is a new DHmodtool out (DHmodtool4c) that let's you install Catalyst drivers on the t60p. I cannot find the original place anymore where I found it, but supposedly it works. I have not tried it though but it's probably much easier than editing the inf files
Download it here:
http://www.kirobyte.com/stuff/ATIMobility.rar
1) you may have to install the libraryfiles.exe which includes some .dll files dhmodtool may need.
2) then install catalyst until it tells you it cannot proceed.
3) use dhmodtool to patch the installer and have it run the catalyst setup

I am a bit confused, is this program just to install the controll center OR the drivers from the desktop cards? I went through the process and I have the catalyst control center on my desktop but it does not open. Also when I open my "ATI 3d Control Panel" there are now more options, but none of them seem to deal with performance. When I check in the device manager the omega driver are still in place.
When I ran the mod tools after the catalyst installed stoped I got an error, but then another screen came up (not a part of the ATI install screen) and installed the catalyst. Then I was forced to exit out of the ATI set up, is this how it is suppost to work?
Thanks!

as I said I haven't tried it yet on my t60p (don't have my thinkpad around atm), but this is how it should work (as tried on my old fujitsu siemens notebook). Give me a week and I'll try on my t60p but right now I just don't have the time to mess around with it :/
The modtool is just for use with the driver alone. You do not need it for the control center, wdm or whatever else.
- uninstall whatever driver you have
- download the ati desktop catalyst driver. I always used the 3 seperate setup files (driver, cc, wdm) and NOT the all-in-one package.
- run the driver setup till it says it cannot find your video card and quits. it should leave you with a c:\ati directory
- run the modtool. it will patche the driver in the c:\ati directory
- after patching it asks you if you want to install the modified catalyst drivers. Say Yes*. The ATI setup comes up and the drivers should install normaly - just like on a desktop.
- the ATI setup should require you to reboot at some point.
- after the reboot the driver should be installed.
- now you can install the control center
hope this helps ...if not I'll see if I can still find the guide to editing the inf files.
------------
* alternatively you can quit modtool here and launch the setup.exe manually. it should be somewhere in the c:\ati directories.

ok, I got the desktop drivers installed but for some reason the "benchmark" option in the ati tray tools gave an error "app does not work in open GL" or something to that effect? What does that mean?
Anyways I ran 3dmark03 with the desk top drivers and the omega drivers
Desktop: 6022
Omega : 6058
I am going to do 05/06 when I get home to see if I should stay with the omega's. Did I maybe do something wrong? Which could cause that error in ati tray tools.

can't help you with the traytools tho. I never used them - I usually just install the drivers and control panel, but it could be that some remains from the omega driver cause the problem, or if you had the firegl driver before, remains of that one may cause it.
You could try to uninstall the current drivers, get an ATI driver cleaning tool (from Guru3D.com for example) to uninstall every bit that may be left of previous drivers and try again.
All this driver business is quite of a hassle until you find a driver you're happy with. I remember this from my previous notebook. It's best to go through this when you're setting up a new windows install.

1. Download/Install DriverCleaner
2. Uninstall ATI drivers using add/remove software from control panel
3. Reboot in safe mode, open DriverCleaner
4. Use CabCleaner to clean out the cab files
5. Switch back to DriverCleaner, Select ATI to clean all ATI drivers
6. Reboot in normal mode, install Omegadriver
Complete cleaned without previous driver residues.
