Squeezin life out of the battery

#1 Post by Mr_Roboto » Wed Apr 05, 2006 8:39 pm

I have become rather battery conscious lately. I have a T42p w/ 15'' screen and I am trying to squeeze every last second of battery out of it. I have turned off all of the ports that I do not use, stopped unneeded services, installed NHC and have reduced my CPU voltage and GPU frequency.

I have a few questions.

1) Will removing the device in the ultra bay help in any significant way?
2) Is there a way to reduce the GPU voltage?
3) What are you guys and gals doing to extend your battery life?
4) What does the battery maintenance wizard do?

Thanks for humoring me in my new found freakish obsession.

I posted somewhere else on this. The battery is a piece of chemistry over which you have no control. I mean no disprect, but your objective is a waste of time and (pardon the pun) energy. Use your battery and enjoy it. When it quits (and it will as certainly as death itself) buy a new one. ... JD Hurst

You have probably already gone to the max in terms of how much you can optimize your battery life without cutting essential operations.

Just go ahead and enjoy your battery while it lasts and especially your 15" T42p. :)

I do not want to give the impression that I am not enjoying my Thinkpad. I am. I just love to tinker. :D

Some guys spend hours tuning their cars. I like tinkering with computers.

Thank you both for your imput.

I probably spent the better of day tinkering with my Thinkpad to get the power profiles I had created *just right*. I got quite a bit out of my batteries, but that was about it. :)

OP, you've done more than I. I don't mess with geekified things like messing with the GPU freq and such. I let PowerPlay and other "by design" features do that for me.

I just use Power Manager. I have a Power Source Optimized profile that's modified from the default ... and an "Adaptive" which puts the processer in that setting for both power sources, and just adjusts the screen brightness and some timers ... and a "quiet" profile which is optimized for quietest fan operation (which also effects battery life in a positive way).

With those three profiles, I rarely have to do much more. If I need more runtime than my two batteries give me,... I bring a power brick. ;)

Just wondering, in the power manage for my T40 I have no option to change the charging life of the battery or when to stop charging it.

Is this feature only for T41+?

The Power Manager (1.12) is for T43s. I use it on my T41, but it's 98% functional. Some of the battery information and maintenance stuff is not supported.

I believe the version for T41/42s is 1.38. I haven't used it, but it's available (4/2005 or something like that).

I'm happy when it shows that for a couple of hours, like it did yesterday. I worked for 2 hours, and it went down 30 minutes.

I just put XP on, and all the IBM stuff, but my T40 doesn't show the battery thingy in the taskbar. Does anybody know if this is correct?
