key replacement?
key replacement?
i popped out my keyboard the other day and broke the fn key. for anyone familiar with the keyboard, there's a blue springy thing attached to the circuitboard. and above thatis a plastic contraption (2 black pieces and a white one) that snaps ontop of the blue thing. above that is the key cap. well, i broke a little part on the white piece, so that it doesn't snap in above the blue springy thing. so i need a replacement white thing. which means i need any key. any ideas where i can get a key replacement?

I haven't the faintest idea - but your post has kept me amused for the last few minutes - I was trying to imagine the look (and the reaction) of the IBM 'person' on the end of the phone when you call up and explain what you've just written - please excuse my brevity - I've had a hard day thing, and it's nice to come home thing and relax thing..

PS. I think you'll find it extremely hard to find an individual key NEW - however, I have seen on this board, people offering seperate keys from busted keyboards - might be worth posting the laptop series/model number as there are subtle changes between the models (keeps us all on our toes things...)

Your best bet is to just order a new keyboard - they are pretty cheap.
I can tell you from experience that it is very difficult (impossible?) to repair a key once it pops off. Not only can you not order the parts, but if you happen to get your hands on some parts you will likely break them trying to get them to go together.
I have no idea how IBM builds these things - there must be some secret process that involves at least 2 or 3 additional dimensions beyond the normal 3+1 in which we live.

it reminds me of the time i just recieved my t42p and installed a game that uses the cursor keys (asterix) and there i am hitting these keys really fast bashing roman soldiers when 2 (yeh 2!) of the keys just flew off! hehe oh my god i spent hours with tweezers putting them back!
i was sweating and had to take a third key off to see how the buggers fitted!
did it in the end, and killed more romans
alls well that ends well.
i suggest you call ibm and just ask for one, they cant cost that much if your not under warrenty
