Wired network problem

#1 Post by Charles Mann » Wed Apr 05, 2006 10:50 pm

I have added my new T60p (2623DDU) to my home wired network, which uses a BEFSX41 Linksys router and BEFCMU10 Linksys cable modem. The network has 4 ThinkPads, 770, A20p, A30p, and now the T60p. The 770, A20p, and A30p work together fine, share files, printers, and access to the internet. But the new T60p will only access the internet, cannot connect to the other computers. I have used the Network Setup Wizard, and cannot solve the connection problem. The 770 is on Windows 98SE, and all of the others are using Windows XP Pro. The Workgroup is “Mshome”, when on the T60p and try to “View Workgroup Computers”, I get “Mshome is not accessible”. I have reset the router, restarted all of the computers several times. Where have I gone wrong??

Make sure that the Firewall settings on all of you computer allow exceptions. For troubleshooting, you may want to disable all of the firewalls temporarily.

On your T60's Local Area Connection properties, make sure that "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" is checked.

As a last resort, try accessing one of your older Thinkpads from the T60 by going to Start->Run and typing in

\\A20p

Replace A20p with the actual name of your computer. or if that doesn't work, try \\192.168.0.4 or whatever the other computer's IP address is.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Just ran into a similar problem too. In my case it was preinstalled Norton firewall that was blocking. So check that also.

Ron makes a good point about firewalls and disabling them while troubleshooting. If you're using ZoneAlarm or the like, add the range of IP addresses that your DHCP server hands out to the "Trusted Zone".

Also, some people, myself included, have found file sharing is better done with XP's Simple File Sharing turned OFF.

Thanks, I will give these things a try. I think the firewall is the problem.
