need your opinion on chicony

can anybody tell me what a big difference do you think chicony and nmb have? I am having this chicony on my 2007-68U and i have a complexed feeling toward it. i am first time user of ibm. if you think the difference is not so big, i may stick with my current machine since it's almost perfect. thanks a lot!

I got the chicony keyboard, and i think its the worst one i have had yet in an ibm. I will be calling them to replace it.

yeah, i agree, i just tried another guy's which got a NMB on it, there's such a big difference, the NMB feels so smooth, god, why these ibm guy began to use such bad quality keyboard, I am thinking that the degrading quality debate is justified

asspenny ,how are you gonna do it? i just called them and they said if the keyboard is not defective, they will not replace it!

Tell them that a buddy has the same machine and his keyboard is great while your sucks (the Chicony truly does).

You won't get an NMB as none seem to be in stock but even the Alps is a big step up.

I assure you I do find this funny, but I feel obligated to point out that "making" your keyboard defective will most likely disqualify you from warranty service on the keyboard :D

That being said, I've got an NMB keyboard on my T40, and it types wonderfully. I don't blame you one bit for wanting an NMB keyboard.

Just call them and tell them you bought the ThinkPad because you understood it to have one of the best keyboards out there and you are disappointed to have received such a low quality keyboard. Explain patiently that there are more than one manufacturer (many, probably most, of the tech people really don't know this--they probably have a lot of other things to worry about).

I did this and they sent me the ALPS keyboard, no charge. If this strategy doesn't work, try another day with a different tech person.

I agree that it's scandalous for Lenovo to ship such markedly different quality keyboards. Especially given how much of the ThinkPad reputation is based on its keyboard. I think they should replace them for free. But it may take some patience and politeness. It can be hit or miss with the tech people (though most are nice).

In the end, if they won't send you one no charge, they only cost $39. When the NMB is availabe, I'm going to buy one.

How does the tech person know how to enter it into the order system if they don't know the different types of keyboards available in the first place? Do they put it in the "Comments" section or something?

Just request the particular keyboard that you want. Say that you read it on a message board while reasearching why your keyboard is so crappy :D .

For clarification, are you suggesting that the request be placed when one is ordering the computer? Or after recieving a computer with one of the lesser keyboards.

I have a Chicony and after several ThinkPads with the different keyboards, I must say this is not bad at all. It's solid, quiet, and the keystroke is comfortable. Did I just get lucky or what?

If indeed there is such a better keyboard in the NMB, I too would like to have that, as I use this as my main computer, for many hours each day.

You can't request the keyboard (or any other part for that matter) when you order it. Two machines with the same model number were shipped to me two days apart (obviously from the same batch) and had different keyboards and screens. Once you receive the laptop call and complain (if you're not happy) and, in my experience, they will swap out the keyboard to make you happy.

Keyboard feel is a very personal thing. If the Chicony feels good to you then by all means keep it. The T4x Chiconys had a horrible -- I mean HORRIBLE -- spacebar that didn't always register. They also came with fingerprints all over the back where factory workers had pressed in all the keys - it was comical. I tried a T60 Chicony and wasn't impressed (seemed sloppy) but the reduced resistance (as compared with the Alps) was fast to type on. The keycaps on the Chicony are different too. The edges are soft and it's a little harder to feel the edges of the flats than with the Alps. It's subtle though.

I think if you tried the NMB you would like it, but I have run into one person that preferred the slightly stiffer, clickier Alps. It's all subjective.

Thanks for the response. So that answers the issue of keyboards.

About the display, mine has a LG and it's dim. What is the best display? This would be very valuable info.

I'm going to send the T60 back and order a T60P 2007-96U.

I checked the two keyboard. The different feelings come from different design detail. It is not about build quality. I just don't understand why Lenovo just use NMB!!

I have the Hydis and it's brighter than the Samsung in my T42p. It's a little washed out compared with the Samsung but with some color correction it's usable and pretty bright for a Lenovo screen.

I had a Hydis too, and I found the screen bright, but I also found the colours lush. I didn't find them washed-out.
Happily picks up his three grand; unhappily hands it over to another company.

I also feel strongly that the keyboards should feel the same across a particular model line.

The short answer is that Lenovo doesn't want to be held hostage to one supplier... say they had production problems with NMB. Lenovo can still churn out T60s by getting more parts from other manufacturers.

The downside though is that we see parts with sometimes significant differences in quality and feel :(
