Hibernation issues - Again!

#1 Post by Stefan Bruckel » Fri Apr 07, 2006 9:53 am

As is noted in other threads, I finally had to reinstall my system at the recommendation of Lenovo engineers, which I did. The system hibernated for a few times but soon enough the same error message started creeping back in. This is by far the most expensive laptop I have purchased... and so far also the least reliable. I am about to give up on Lenovo and return to using $1K consumer laptops, which I have used for 10 years, although they don't last very long in 12 - 16 hour per day use. But I'll give it another shot this weekend before giving up on this computer and the Lenovo experience. Thanks for your additional thoughts...

In regard to hibernation, I believe the difference between "worked" and "not worked" is that in between the two I actually connected to a wireless network at home. Now, here at the office, it can't find that, hence no hibernation... I can't even completely shut down the system. It is stuck in the Windows shut down screen and I have to turn it off manually.

The error message states that hibernation is not possible due to the "Sierra wirless com port device COM5". When I disable the device, then reboot, I get an error message that now it can't hibernate because of the ThinkPad Modem. So I go in, disable that, reboot, and then I can get it to hibernate.

I have not had these types of issues with any of my other cheaper laptops.

My real question is, do I likely have a hardware issue? I am not doing anything odd, have no odd software installed or odd settings. If it's hardware related, then I'll ship the brick back as unacceptable. If it's a software thing, then maybe there is a work around.

Thanks for your thoughts, but after a week of playing around, wasting countless hours on this laptop that I had thought would be my best ever, I am about to give up as a failed experiment.... but I'll give it one more shot.

Can you please post your system specs and what you have tried to fix the problem?

I am not sure what additional information I can provide.... the above is as accurate as I can provide, I think. It's a T60p DDU with 2 gig memory. Fresh out of the box with no other odd gadgets or software running. Is that helpful? What additional specific information would be helpful? Sorry, not a technical guru on this end, obviously...

It may be your 2 GB of RAM

I had hibernation problems as well (though a different error message). This patch (which you can obtain from Microsoft Support) fixed it for me.

Sounds to me like your laptop is trying to always maintain an internet connection. If you are using Access Connections, try turning off Location Switching. Also uncheck the box to allow Wireless Connection at Windows logon.

Probably it is some of the installed software causing this problem. Take a look in event viewer for other possible clues. Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

Make sure you don't have some virus or spyware trying to connect to the internet.

I don't understand what happened with my hibernation issues, but the conflicts involved either or both the ThinkPad Modem and the Sierra Wireless Com Port Device COM5 found in the device manager.

I disabled both... I never use a modem any more and I don't know what this Sierra com port thing is (or why it's needed... my wireless connections work just fine, thank you).

With both of the above disabled in the Device Manager, I no longer have any issues (as far as the T60 is concerned anyway!).

Thanks again for all your feedback above.

Also make sure the BIOS is updated. There's a new one released as of April 6th. They disabled something for standby though:

(Fix) The Ethernet device may not work intermittently after resuming from standby while in battery mode. Deep Smart Power Down feature is temporarily disabled. (BIOS)

It *might* correlate with hibernation scenarios as well.

Can't reconnect to wireless after standby/hibernate

#9 Post by jwr » Wed Jan 17, 2007 12:54 am

My T60p will not resume wireless connection (disconnects) after Standby or Hibernation (my other Thinkpads all have done so in the past). I must reboot everytime to renew wireless connection -- it doesn't matter where I am or which wireless network I am connecting to . . . problem always the same. Does resume fine when on DSL (home) or Network (university). Through ThinkPad technical support, we have alternately connected to wireless through Windows and ThinkVantage Access -- the same problem occurred in whichever mode we used. We also uninstalled and reinstalled both of these and their drivers. Additionally, we have updated the BIOS, and uninstalled/reinstalled the power management driver, power management, and the wireless driver. Nothing has corrected the problem. Still must reboot after standby or hibernate to get connected with wireless. Addendum: Found out tonight that colleague with exact same machine has exact same problem. Fixes/ideas?

ZoneAlarm, and possibly some other software firewalls can cause this problem. After resuming from Standby or Hibernation, try shutting down the firewall, then try to establish your connection. If this fixes it, at least you know where the problem lies. I use Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall, and I do not have this problem.
