No idea if IBM will let you take advantage of these tax free days, but it's worth a shot for money you'd save.

MASSACHUSETTS: Aug. 14, 2004 (only)
All non-business sales at retail of single items of tangible personal property costing $2,500 or less are exempt from sales and use taxes. Exception: Any cost over $175 per item will be taxable.

MISSOURI: Aug. 13-15, 2004
Certain back-to-school purchases, such as clothing, school supplies, computers, and other items as defined by the statute, will be exempt from sales tax for this time period only.

NORTH CAROLINA: Aug. 6-8, 2004
Clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item; and computers of $3,500 or less per item will be exempt.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Aug. 6-8, 2004
School-related items, clothing, computers and printers will be exempt from the state’s 5% sales and use tax and any additional local county sales tax.

VERMONT: Aug. 7-9 and Oct. 9-11, 2004
Personal computers, computer peripheral devices and software purchased with the computer, up to $4,000 when purchased by individuals for personal will be exempt on these dates from sales and use taxes.

WEST VIRGINIA: Aug. 6-8, 2004
Certain "back to school" products such as clothing, footwear, school supplies, computers, computer accessories and calculators will be exempt from sales and use tax

I don't know if this will be of any use, but there you go. Also, if you're living in Montanta, you've probably figured it out by this point in your life, but you don't have a state sales tax.

I'm close to 100% sure it's the 14th. For one, it seems much more reasonable to me that Mass would choose a saturday (14th) as opposed to a sunday.

It is 8/14. http://www.dor.state.ma.us/forms/SalesTaxHoliday.htm

The Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday
A recently enacted statute provides for a Massachusetts "sales tax holiday" The Act provides that the sales tax holiday will occur on August 14, 2004 and on that day, all non-business sales at retail of single items of tangible personal property costing $2,500 or less are exempt from sales and use taxes. Please read the Technical Information Release 04-14 (TIR 04-14) for all the information you will need to enjoy a sales tax holiday.

When a retailer sells an item(s) exempt by virtue of the sales tax holiday, and the total transaction is $1,000 or more, a retailer must document the transaction by obtaining and keeping a Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday Purchaser's Certification of Non-Business Use, signed by the purchaser of the exempt items(s).
