Configuring Access Connections with an external adapter

Just bought a Belkin pre-N adapter (to work with the pre-N router, since my a/b dual band WiFi won't). I noticed that AC sees the card but won't use it. It only works if I let windows configure it, but I'd rather use AC. Is there a way to configure an external card to work with AC? I did install the adapter's software, if that has anything to do with it, although I'm pretty sure I disabled it.
