Screwing down the optical drive

#1 Post by Kenn » Wed Jul 28, 2004 12:05 am

One nice feature on the Ultrabay slim that I immediately took advantage of was the small allen screw (included in the manual packet) that lets you lock the optical drive down. After seeing how easy it was to pop the DVD-writer out, I'm glad this small attention to detail was included. Anybody else do this?

I don't (because I make sure to never leave my ThinkPad anywhere out of my sight) but yes, it is a nice feature. My previous Dell Latitude D600 also had this, but it was a regular (phillips, I believe) screw instead.

Ha! I never knew what that hole was for, and thought that screw was just a spare. Some people have said that hole was for reducing shock (from what?).

Reducing shock? Rofl :D

When i first ripped the box open and opened the country pack, I saw the single screw in the ziplock bag and somehow just "knew" that was exactly what it would be for. My one moment of mind-melding with the thinkpad designers I guess.

Now, if I could ever keep in mind what Fn-F9 does (or why it's unlabeled on the keyboard)...

When I saw the title of this thread I laughed - I usually manage to screw up my cd drive...

I wish I knew how to remove that annoying "Safely Remove Hardware" and the "... Connection Not Found" icons in the system tray, useless waste of real estate =\

If you mean the yellow boxes that go away after a few seconds, then I want to know too...There has to be an XP setting somewhere; however, I can't find it every time I look for it...After a little while I find something else to tweak and I forget about it...Now that you reminded me of if, I guess I will have to look for it again :)

Removing Icons

#10 Post by BuckleyMagic » Wed Jul 28, 2004 11:04 am

Woohoo! First post! I've been reading through this forum since I ordered my T42 2 weeks ago but I finally have something to contribute!

Regarding the annoying icons in the taskbar: You might already know this but this is how I deal with them. In Win XP goto START -> Control Panel -> Taskbar and Start Menu. Check the "Hide Inactive Icons" box. Click the "Customize" button. Then find the entries you don't like (e.g. "Safely Remove Hardware") left lcick on them and then select "Always Hide" from the drop down box to the right of the entry. Do the same for any other anoying entries that appear near the clock. Then hit "OK" button twice and you are good to go!

This way those annoying icons are still be on the task bar but are always kept hidden until you click the expansion arrow to show them. I do this for all my icons except my network connection icon since I enjoy watching the little network traffic monitors light up.

I hate that "remove safely" systray icon too, it is SUPREMELY useless.

The thing is, I hate having to go through the Hide Icons function, because if you want everything else to show up all the time, you have to go through and manually set every icon for every program at least once, when you use the program or install a new one. That kind of continuous attention I don't care for.

Microsoft should just have a checkbox (like everybody else does) on the Remove Hardware window that lets you remove/hide the systray icon.
