Have you hit F11 after starting the system?

Just hit F11 without installing any of the IBM software can restore my thinkpad to its factory setting.

I'm pretty sure it is the same for the t43 as it is the t42, turn off wait 5 seconds, turn on and press f11 when prompted. You will enter the predesktop area. Select restore to factory contents.

i think your thinkpad should be installed with Rescue & Recovery software.

Corporate/Institutional users often have SOEs installed which blow away the standard factory installation configuration, so generalisation about what any individual user may find on their ThinkPad can be dangerous.

Cheers,
