Better machine?

#1 Post by JimL » Sat Apr 08, 2006 9:08 pm

Assuming one has a T23 1200 ghz and XP Pro, what great advantages would there be for someone to whom budget is top priority and whizbang is bottom priority, to move to a later model laptop?

From reading a lot of post's/opinions about this it seems to be more what you actually need the laptop for. If it suits all your needs there really would not be a great advantage to move up. On the other hand if you forsee a big change in the hardware/software horizon relative to your needs you may think about moving up.

The T23 is a very good machine..If you really don't have to move up I'd stay put...

If you're happy with the T23 and it's doing it's job,why change? If it's not broke don't fix it..Right?
1 T23 1.13 Mhz.SXGA+..512 RAM..Built in Wireless
1 T23 1.13 Mhz..256 RAM...
1 600e that now a 600x(500Mhz) with 256 RAM
1 600x(500 Mhz) with 327 Ram
1 600x upgraded to 600Mhz with 256 RAM

I stick with the T23 as well, if you have no apparent reason to switch. They are really nice machines, especially the 1.133GHz and the 1.2GHz models.

I moved from my T23 to a T40 for a few reasons...

1. It was too slow for me. I had a 1.2ghz p3-m, 60gb 7200RPM HDD, 1GB PC133, and it was just too [censored] sluggish, mainly fault of the S3 chip inside. I HATE that chip...
2. Battery life was getting pretty bad. with the main and ultrabay batt, it was getting ~3.5hours.. i used to get more like 5.5-6. with just the main batt, its more like 2. My T40 can pull 5 hours on one main batt.
3. The ultrabay Combo IV drives are way overpriced, no way im spending $80-$100 on a CD-RW/DVD drive.
4. The antennas in the T23 are pretty weak, and my T40 with the same wireless card in the MPCI slot gets MUCH, MUCH better reception
5. my XGA screen is not only crappy to use due to the large resolution, but it was getting pretty grungy and i didnt want to spend to replace the panel. SXGA+ screens and the cable for the T2x series are expensive as all hell on ebay.
6. USB2.0. I dont want some huge card sticking out of the PCMCIA slot and I wanted USB2. This rules out the T30 as well, as it uses the same southbridge as the T23.
7. Gigabit Ethernet. Transferring files between computers is so much faster now.
8. Its thinner. I like really thin laptops. This also ruled out the T30 as an upgrade path, it is larger than the T23. Im not saying hte T23 is huge, but the T40 is slimmer and sleeker, IMO.
9. The T40, IMO, is more solid than my T23 was. My T23 developed some cracks in the keyboard bezel which I had to replace. I also think the Hinges on the T40 are nicer than teh T2x series, but the T2x hinges arent bad.

all in all, the T23 is a great machine. I love mine. The T4x are simply better laptops though.... in every respect. As for the keyboards, its a wash. I like some things about the T23 one and some things about the T40. the T40 keyboard is a Chinese NMB and the 23 is a Thai NMB... the 23 is just a bit more squishy than the T40's keyboard, which is more clicky, but gives great tactile feedback and I rather like it.

I was jonsin for an upgrade. i was planning on a T60, then my dad told me he wnated to buy me one but I would have to wait for a few months for him to come up with the cash to afford one for the both of us. So, since my sister is going off to college, I bought this. whenever i get my T60, we're giving this one to my sister and the T23 will remain my backup. otherwise, i might have just held on to the T23, but it has more than one purpose.
