The drive I have is an IBM DVD-ROM Model GDR-8081N. It refuses to read CDs. What am I missing? WinXP Pro was recently reinstalled.

defective.

I had a PS2 that read DVD's just fine and refused to read CD's

if a drive will read DVD's, it will read CD's. if a drive burns DVD's, itll burn CD's... theyre always backward compatable like that.

i dont find that to be true. dvd-r/rw drives can not always burn cd-r/rw, which is why you can opt to pay more for the "combo" drive or just a dvd-r/rw.

correct me if im wrong so i dont keep thinking this...

I thought "combo drive" refers to CD burners that can also recognize DVD-ROMs.

Correct. A combo drive is one that can burn CDs and reads DVDs, hence the nomenclature: CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive.
