Hi just wanted to know when will a ssystem start to slow down. For example i have a 3000 photos from a powerbook if i transfer it to a T43 with 60 gb will it slow the entire system down ? also what if i add 4000 mp3 songs ? I also have 1gbof memory ?
Whats the best photo software ( preferably free) for the pc

SLOW DOWN SYSTEM
You won't notice a system slowdown with the scenarios you provided (as long as you have enough free space left) because your files aren't usually used by the OS - there's only some indexing once, and thats it.
Note that this is not the case if you install 100s of fonts and/or a lot of applications, which obviously decrease the performance of the system. The main cause for this is the registry with a lot of junk, together with a lot of active background processes.
When it comes to a free photo software on the Windows plattform, I would recommend Picasa from Google: picasa.google.com

My interpretation of the question didn't include the copying task itself - thanks for bringing this upjdhurst wrote:Large copies use most of memory and slow down a system. My two machines operate very efficiently, but if I copy a 3Gb virtual machine from one machine to another, one or both systems bog down until the copy is done.
I dont know if it works, but you could probably adjust the priority in task manager, or, if there's a large amount of small files, you could write a funny batch script with idle timesjdhurst wrote:I have never found away around that, but there may be one.
