Whats IBM's/Lenovo's keyboard replacement policy?

#1 Post by Navck » Mon Apr 10, 2006 6:34 pm

Isn't it that you can get a new keyboard every year, or exchange your current one in? My T43's keyboard is getting pretty worn out (The E key's sticker is coming off already.)

just tell them that 1 of your key is missing and they will send you a replacement within 48 hours. Assuming that your IBM is still under warranty.
Also, you won't need to send the old keyboard back either

I knew one guy who got a new keyboard just because he called and they wanted him to send his old one back, but I'm not sure if I can do that, so I'm just checking. By missing, can that mean the sticker is falling or the key is a bit wobbly?

You probably won't have to send the old keyboard back, my rep told me I needed to, but when I received my keyboard the order slip did not indicate that I needed to send it back nor did they include any return box (I guess it is because shipping the old keyboard back to them does not justify the cost).

My CHICONY replacement keyboard has a wobbly "H" key, but I have not called IBM for another new keyboard just because they may be suspicious for making another request so soon. Besides, the key has not affected my performance yet; I will have to wait for the wear and tear to see if the key gets worse.

If the sticker is falling, the rep may just say live with it; warranty does not cover wear and tear. But if the key is wobbly, then it may be considered a defect and they will replace it for you. If they seem reluctant, just emphasize that you cannot afford to wait for a new keyboard to be shipped to you after the key breaks off.

Heh, will they replace the keyboard if you claim accidental damage with finger oils and buncha "gunk" getting in between the grooves in the keyboard?

I give myself another couple of months before i get enough "gunk" in the keyboard to when i actually have to call it on for replacement....compared to the keyboards i've seen on some of the corporate issue dells, my keyboard is absolutley sterile.

Compressed air on a regular basis keeps things pretty clean.

and using a tissue, and a credit card to wipe in between can also help (wrap the tissue around the card or other thin object).... and carefully wipe.

Keeps mine rather clean.

Just got my keyboard, the rep I just called said I don't need to return the old one, is this true?

I recently purchased a T40 on eBay and was curious about getting a fresh keyboard for it. The warranty expires 2006-07-03, but I have no experience with IBM warranty service.

Do I just call up and quote my serial number or do I need to provide further proof of purchase etc?

Just call them up, the warranty is with the machine, not the purchaser. Anyone who has the machine in their hands can get warranty service on it.

Thanks for the info! I'm guessing that I should be asking for English, U.S. (International) keyboard 13N9860 by CHICONY.

Out of interest, what is the difference in quality between the CHICONY and NMB boards?

Most say there is a big difference and they prefer the NMB keyboards over the Chiconys; but it is your personal experience that counts.

My T42 is still under extended warranty and i simply called IBM and told them one of the keys stopped working.(Actually i just wanted a new board due to wear) They said no problem and i had a new keyboard at my front door the next day! Thanks IBM and DHL. I didn't have to return the old one. Now i have an extra keyboard to rob keys from as i need.

I gave IBM a ring here in Australia, and after short conversation they are dispatching the keyboard. Just verified the serial number and warranty status, and voila!

Hopefully the new keyboard is more like the one on my T23, as opposed to the clackety-clack that is my current T40 board. Thanks for the info guys, I'm just starting on my Thinkpad Voyage!

I already called in once on March 27th 2006 because one of the keys in my previous CHICONY broke. I really want to get a NMB keyboard now so that my chances of getting one Made in Thailand (not China) are still high since I live in Canada so they may still have some in storage. I also want a spare keyboard should my existing keyboard break (I don't want to wait a whole week to get a replacement). Would it be suspicious if I make another warranty claim now having only been 3 weeks since I last claimed it?

Let's hope this policy doesn't change, it's nice to receive a new keyboard to replace a malfunctioning one without too much arguing.

Yes, if your reading this IBM/Lenovo, one of the reasons I continue to buy Thinkpads is because of your wonderful keyboard replacement policy. Please don't change it.

In case anyone in Canada wants to know the retail price of the NMB keyboard (39T0519), it is $70.60 CDN or $62.00 US (not including taxes). $14.50 US more than in the US :(. Think it is worth it?

Hey Hanson, this is taishan, the same one from the RFD.

Things are cheaper in the US and more models and stuff. Also with the exchange rate going down quite a lot, it makes things more tempting in the US.

Don't worry, I remember you. From what you said, I still cannot figure out if it is worthwhile to order one here.

Just one thing, guys: NONE of you EVER gets to complain how much your Thinkpad cost, if you're pulling stunts like this.

Mine's not a stunt, the laptop needs the new keyboard. BTW, where can I get new TrackPoints? Do I order them from IBM directly or is there an alternative?

my keyboard is perfect but the touchpad buttons are very wobbly.
I know another guy with a touchpad and his touchpad butons are kinda wobbly too. does lenovo happily send replacemnt for those too? and do the actually get any better?
thanks

I have just installed my NMB keyboard (FRU: 39T0519), which arrived this morning at 10:30AM. Easy to install, fantastic keyboard that feels as good as my T23 and fast delivery from IBM. Awsome!

So how does your NMB keyboard compare to your previois CHICONY one?
