I could care less about Dual Layer media, but the capablity to write normal R/RW media faster while keeping a DVD-RAM capablity is good.

I presume this is the drive mentioned.

Edit: T60

Yeah except that's for the T60. Does not work with T4x models.

Nice! I wish it was on sale, like the other burner.........

I would imagine the T60 burner will fit but will not "conform" to the lines?

I don't think the T60 version is compatible for some reason other than the lines. I'm sure it will go on sale soon enough

I have had the 40Y8623 flat-bezel in my T43p for the last month and it works just fine. You might not even notice the bezel "not conforming" if you weren't looking for it. No big deal.

Neither would I care, for DL media is freaking costly here! Costs more than 5-6x the cost of normal DVDs!
Plus I hardly have any data that *has* to fit single DVD. But increased DVD write speeds is good.

The dual layer drive on an X60s is the H-L GSA-4083N and it works perfectly on an 'old' T43p. The bezel doesn't quite match but that's no biggie.

Nice release. And, at least they didn't list it for $499 or some other outrageous IBM-type price.

Solution to overpriced internal burners..

#14 Post by filsed » Sat Apr 15, 2006 10:32 am

Why don't you guys buy one of the latest internal 5.25" DVD burners for around 40$, USB-to-IDE adapter (BYTECC BT-200 on newegg.com) for 20$ and you are all set. I know, it is not light but much cheaper...

Would you not need an external PSU as well?

Yep, for 5.25" drives you need an external power adapter.

The Bytecc BT-200 comes with a power adapter for 3.5" and 5.25" drives. For 2.5" HDs, you don't even need a power adapter, just the connection cord. With no case to fuss with, you can hook up bare-nekkkid 2.5" and 3.5" HDs and internal CD/DVD drives. It's the slickest $20 widget I've bought in a long, long time. http://www.byteccusa.com/product/adapter/BT-200.htm

Lenovo's site still says 1-3 weeks wait time. In fact, I couldn't locate the FRU number for the drive.

I'm underwhelmed. These things have been available externally, the only news here is that you can replace your perfectly good Multiburner + (unless you have older, or lower grade optical drives) with the newer, shinier, slightly faster and dual-layer capable drive IN your T4x.

Okay, if you were waiting to get an Ultrabay DVD burner, this is great news. Otherwise ... (yawn). I'll be excited when I can get really nifty ExpressCard components. THAT'S something I'm waiting for.
2668-75U T43, 2GB RAM, 2nd hand NMB kybd, Dock II, spare Mini-Dock, and spare Port Replicators. Wacom BT tablet. Ultrabay 2nd HDD.
2672-KBU X32, 1.5GB RAM, 7200 rpm TravelStar HDD.

I agree.

If they come out with a Blu-Ray ultrabay slim burner then that FRU I will look for for.

Frankly, I am not too impressed with HD DVDs or Blu-ray either; Samsung has a Blu-ray burner out and it is slow, doesn't burn CDs, and quite large. Not to mention that, for a while, the newer optical formats are just going to serve as more (expensive too) backup room since few others will have that kind of an optical drive to read them with. :)

I read an intriguing tech article somewhere, sorry can't remember, comparing the HD DVD and Blu Ray formats. Spec and hardware and vendors all taken into account, it's shaping up to be another Beta VS. VHS. :P Oh, and let us not forget that stupid Disney (?) idea for "disposable DVDs." Anyone actually own some of those "video music discs?" Or the ones that had the lyrics on them, but you had to have a special player to get them? (yawn)

Sounds like a verbatim quote of what the pundits said about the initial round of DVD burners for data backup when the format came out 10 odd years ago.

But thats neither here nor there, right?
