Fresh Windows Install or keep the existing for performance

#1 Post by wildzx » Tue Apr 11, 2006 8:11 pm

Ok, I will be getting my X60 this week. Now do you recommended installing a Fresh Version of Windows or just uninstalling the programs that are no use. Will clean install make a difference in terms of speed and hard disk space and getting rid of the junk program and files.
After reviewing the new x series it does seem as not too many junk programs are installed as in other notebooks....but still it would be nice to utilize the full processing power with clean installation.........?

What do you guys think or recommended...? For those who did clean install, did it make a difference in terms of performance?

A fresh install without the IBM tools might speed the start-up. However, since I have everything loaded and running and, since CPU runs at less than 2 percent most of the time, it is hard for me to see how a fresh install will increase performance. Further, there are a lot of questions in here about issues arising from a fresh install. I don't recommend one way or the other, though. ... JD Hurst

Personally, I think that the IBM/Lenovo has done a pretty good job of only installing what is needed. I have performed a couple of "fresh" installs only to download all of the IBM drivers and apps. If you do not want to use some of their third party "value add" apps they are easy enough to remove.

My advice would be not to waste your afternoon and just enjoy your new TP.

There were only a few programs that I needed to uninstall. Most of the stuff is pretty good. Another note -- if you go into the system restore thing on boot, and choose "restore to factory default" what it really does is load up a fresh install of windows and then run a bunch of scripts to install the ibm stuff. Theoretically, you could cancel those scripts and then only install the stuff you want. Not sure on this, of course, since I like the default install.
