Which used T-series to replace X32?

#1 Post by silo » Wed Apr 12, 2006 12:49 am

I'm thinking of getting a used T-series Thinkpad to replace my X32. i was thinking that a 1.86 or 2.0 GHz Centrino T43 would be the best buy at this point, but need advice from folks as to what they think is the best price v. power machine.

If another T-series is better at this point, please tell me.

I have a 7200RPM 100G Hitachi drive that I'll want to use, and will go to at least 1 gig of ram. I also have a DVD writer in my X32 that I'd like to bring over to the new machine (if it fits--i don't know if it does).

In any case, all tips about this kind of purchase are much appreciated.

I'd look more at the T42 series.

It won't have the issues w/ hdds that the T43 does (may or may not affect you...is it an IBM drive?)

It can use the same RAM as your X32 (not sure if this affects you either)

if neither of the above are issues, then get a T43...if they are, a T42 might be a better use of your money.

T43 uses DDR2; T41, T42, T40, X31, X32 all use DDR1

T43s are notorious for not liking non-IBM drives due to a firmware check they do. The T43s use a SATA/PATA adapter, and if you drive isn't on the white list, it comes up with a 2010 error. Recent BIOS updates allows your computer to still boot up properly, but you'll get a warning every time you reboot.
