#1 Post by lid » Wed Apr 12, 2006 7:55 pm

Could you setup the hidden recovery partition with your own uptodate XP config, on a T40???

Thanks for every answer, Jesper

Why not try Rescue and Recovery you can set your computer up as you like then save a backup for future recovery. The only issue is that you will lose some disk space.

The hidden partition is not a partition at all. How would R&R know how to write to it? The idea is appealing - it would be nice to (having ordered CD's) to have F11 restore what you had and not what came initially.

Is it possible to back up this partition to somewhere else? I'm getting a T42 and I have plenty of desktop storage space, but, would like to keep as much on the desktop to save space on the laptop.

Purchase recovery CD's, or make recovery CD's, make sure they work, and then in the BIOS you can display the HPA and delete it. Make sure you can rebuild your machine with known working CD's before trying this. ... JD Hurst

I do know that some people are looking into being able to come up with your own image for it on Linux as you can explore it using dd. Although it does use the very complex technology of BEER and PARTIES (I kid thee not, those are actually the names for the); technology...OF THE FUTURE. :D

No. The recovery area is a Hidden Protected Area that is in addition to the four available partitions. It is, of course, an area on the disk - just not a partition. There is a white paper on this - I have it as predesktop.pdf, but I sometimes change file names. ... JD Hurst
