HELP! unstable T40 with dothan 2.1Ghz upgrade.
For those who have sucessfuly upgraded their T40 to a dothan 2.1Ghz processor have you been obtaining eratic or intermitant BSOD?
I can't seem to place my finger on the problem....
I recently installed NHC to clock down to 1.8Ghz and it seems to be more stable... any suggestions? is it a bad driver? or should I reinstall windows xp? is it normal at boot time that I see a Pentium inside logo (no mention of Pentium M inside logo as depected on the intel site)
I've installed the latest bios 3.20 bios etc...
sure would like to hear from other users; who have upgraded to same CPU and if they haved lived similar experiences and any potential solutions to my Blue Screen of Deaths!!

are you sure your cooling is seated properly?
sounds like it might be overheating

Lithium726 that's a good question, my CPU after doing a disk clean-up
located in my docking station; CPU climbed all the way up to 93c seem very high to me... I canceled the operation and the cpu climbs back down to 51c (cpu running at 1.8GHz via NHC Dynamic Switching)
I sure hope I don't have to re-open the laptop just to tighten three screws on the CPU heatsink...
I did however greased up the CPU with some thermal compounds
(Stars-350 with a thermal conductivity of:> 4.0W resistance 0.06)
the BSOD are intermitant...

those temps are WAY too high - did you clean off the old thermal compound when you applied the new? are you sure it was screwed down all the way?

Did you use artic silver 5?
I use it when i did the upgrade. now at this moment while i am wriiting my cpu temp is 43c when i play high end games it reaches 85c but only after hours.
Clean the heat sink and apply artic silver 5 i see it at compusa.
keep us posted!

arctic sliver 5 does not work much better than any other compound, a few degrees at best. Ive used many, many different compounds in laptops, desktops, and on video cards and never saw more than a degree or two differnce when the compound is applied correctly.
as i recall, the stuff at compusa is not actually AS5, just silver based thermal compound, but i could be wrong.

Yeah, those temps are WAY too high.
On my T42 (with a Graphics Card that generates MUCH more heat than the T40) it only hit about 75C on full load for HOURS of use and idle is around 40C. Double check that you have things properly seated.

Do it one more time.
remove the fan clean both the fan heat sink and the cpu apply a SMALL amount of thermal paste get a SMALL mirror like the ones uses the dentist
reinstall the fan LOOK it is seating correctly and adjust the fan until it seats complete. And test it again. In the worst scenario the CPU is not working like it should.
Where did you buy it?

CPU's are solid state devices - they either work or they dont. it is *possible* to burn up a non-essential part of the chip (read: Cache) and still have the logic work... but that is very, very, very rare.

True for 99% of the time, but I did have one 2.0GHz Dothan that would boot through the BIOS and then give a kernel error when booting XP. Weirdest processor. Waisted 4 days trouble shooting that thing and just gave up.lithium726 wrote:CPU's are solid state devices - they either work or they dont. it is *possible* to burn up a non-essential part of the chip (read: Cache) and still have the logic work... but that is very, very, very rare.
Anyway, this HAS TO BE A contact problem. Make sure that HSF is screwed down properly.

Try with another sl7v3 processor or replace your fan with a M10 fan.
In my case i upgrade fron banias 1.5 to dothan 1.8 and then to dothan 2.10 and in the las two i have the same cpu temp.
Somethimes things are not supposed to happen but they do.
So don't discart any opinion or idea posted in this forum.

Happy Easter
Thank you for all your replies, HOWEVER; my problems are mainly at the initial bootup process, I could go through like 8 BSOD's (where the CPU is when cool) when it finally boot's I can use it for hours.. clocked down to 1.8GHz and the mean temp is steady at 49-50c
I would seem to me like there is somekind of driver problem with XP?
I never re-installed XP when I changed my CPU and 7200rpm HD
Could it be a bad driver?
I purchased both CPU and HD from ebay ithinker to be more exact, I noticed several individuals puchasing parts from her...(malaysia) are these part's like rejects off the asembly plant????????? I wonder..
I hope I sure got a few of you going for loop on this one....
so.. happy easter to all of you!!

A CPU is either going to work, or it is not (i.e. no boot). There should be almost no driver differences in the upgrades you mentioned, but a clean install can never hurt.
Did you go back and re-seat the CPU and verify that the HSF is firmly attached?

Are we sure anyone with a T40 motherboard has successfully upgraded to a 2.1Ghz CPU? I believe I have only seen T41 and T42 motherboards successfully upgraded with that CPU. I have also upgraded to a 2.1ghz CPU in my T41p without any problems...but maybe there is something about a T40 motherboard causing the problems?

could be due to processor heat, or could be a bad memory module.
have your temps dropped any after re-seating the CPU?

Ok... don't know if it's resolved my problem but I can confirm a drop in at least 4c; so definetly was worth going through the trouble of opening up the beast!
I lost a sticky plastic cover... just went flying off to nowhere land! I will keep you all informed if it made a difference for the BSOD's in the coming day's
note.. when comparing to my 1.8 NHC I was getting 50-51c at present it's down to 46-47c

are those full load or idle temps?
My chip idles at 36C (600mhz, .7v) and full loads (large FFT test in prime95, 1.7ghz, 1.02v) at 52C, with the fan on its lowest speed (ie, it has not ramped up yet, I am not controlling it myself)
