fed up installing drivers for ethenet card

#1 Post by tokoe » Thu Jul 29, 2004 5:14 am

Hello,

I recently bought an x20 from ebay and I wonder if there really is a network card installed. When I go to ibm and autodetect my system it comes up with updated drivers for the 3com combo card, but winxp can't find the device and if I install the drivers anyway it says it isn't working or something. In the bios there are options to wake on lan with an intel ethernet card, so I'm getting confused what card I have if any. Winxp did find a lucent winmodem though and I'm beginning to suspect that I don't have a combo card and just a rj45 port. Can somebody eplain to me what is going on?

Kind regards, Timothy

Difficult to answer you without knowing which specific model X20 you have, but FWIW models 11U, 12U, 31U and 32U came with only a modem installed, not the combo card.

The fact that there's a wake on LAN option in the BIOS is only an indicator that the function is supported, not that there's an ethernet card installed.

The combo cards are widely available on eBay and installation is simple.

I'll open it up and see what card is installed. If there is no network card installed I might consider putting in a wifi card (if there is room in there to put an antenna).

When you open the back up look for 1 or 2 wires comeing off the Mini-PCI card

If it is just 1 wire you only have the modem. If it is two you have te combo Nic/modem. In either case you should be able to pick up a combo mini-PCI card for under $50 to get you both.

This morning I opened up the thinkpad and I just have a modem mini-pci card, so no wonder I couldn't get it the ethernet card to work

Mini PCI combo card (INTEL)'s FRU number: 08K3125
Mini PCI combo card (3COM)'s FRU number: 00N8117

Get one from Ebay. There are plenty for 13 bucks. Do an advanced search with one of the FRUs.

They are widely available in the rest of the world, but in the UK they can't be found. Would theDell PN 9C130 mini pci combo card work too, because that would save me alot of shipping costs and time?

If the Dell card was cheap it would not hurt to try but it might not work as IBM at times locks the bios to only accept certian cards.

Ok, I'll see how cheap it stays and if not I'll just get an approved one.

Very odd that there's no mini pci combo cards on ebay in the UK right now, usually there's a few at least, I got one for all of a fiver a few weeks ago.

tokoe,

Contact the seller, I'm sure he/she will ship to UK. It's there within a week.

Hello,

I found a 3com combo card on ebay uk, but although it says that it is compatible with the ibm x series, there is no FRU I recognise and the feedback rating of the seller is only 7 with some negative feedback. Should I just go for it and see what happens?

That seller is a big NO NO. 7 feedback, 73.3%...
Buy one from Ebay USA. Airmail is about $5. Just enter the FRU number into the search field and check the box "Search title and description".

Think I'll do that then, I'll ask the seller in advance how much the shipping costs will be and how long it will take to get here and I'll get one from the other side of the atlantic (could ask tony blair if he can take one with him when he visits bush again  ).

Thanks for the help,

Timothy
