When I try do dowload it from your link it's says "so such file..."
after clicking on the "I agree" link.
Anyone else who dowloaded it successfully?

[EDIT: I could download the Diskette version
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... MIGR-50277
It seems only the Non-diskette version is not correctly linked yet.

I just installed it an ran 3DMark2001SE to make the CPU heat up and get the fan started. Right now my ThinkPad is pretty warm and the fan is going - I will post an update when the machine starts to cool off and the fan starts spinning more slowly.

When the fan started going about medium speed I noticed that the slight "tick" every 5 seconds or so did not occur.

Edit: My T40 has cooled off, and the fan is running at low speed. I don't hear any of the -----^------^------^ (where ^ = slight buzz or tick) anymore.

It would be nice if the fan shut off, but I can't hear it ticking at least.

Finally, I waited 7 months for the fix :D. Well, I really only spent 3 weeks with the annoyance before switching the fan so I could barely ever hear the ticking. My fan does shut down when it's cool and the CPU is running at full speed plugged into the AC.

Actually, according to IBM, ECP should be updated first then the BIOS.

Yep your right I had already updated to the 3.06f so all I needed was the
EC guess that's what I was thinking.

I just did the update and there is some improvement. Someone else said that the surge still comes every 30 seconds--this seems to be true.

My first impression is that it's at least a 50% improvement, but I'll withhold final judgment for a few days.

Is this surge you mention the one that typically "beeps/ticks" every 5 seconds? If so, I still have this problem (still every 5 sec.) and wish to do any update I can to minimize it. I have the latest (3.03) embedded controller and the 3.06F BIOS. I heard there was a non-official release of either embedded or BIOS that reduced the ticks to every 30 seconds. Is that file still available?

If you have it, please email it to: AgentDSS@aol.com as I would be very greatful. I cannot stand this noise when working in a library.

please help explain to me

#14 Post by t41user » Thu Oct 07, 2004 3:57 pm

Hi. Could some people please help me understand how a new embedded controller could fix fan noise? Is it suppose to change the speed of the fan, or the amount of power going to the fan? I'm serious, could someone please explain this to me like I am a six year old? The only thing I can understand on my own is how often and under what conditions the fan comes on and goes off. But how could the sound of the fan be changed by an embedded controller? What is an embedded controller? If I don't mind the fan noise or anything else about my T41, am I looking for trouble if I don't bother ever to update the embedded controller or the bios? Thanks for any help.

t41user,

The ECP V3.03 is supposed to reduce the 5sec periodic fan
pulsation to acceptable levels.

If you don't have any problem with your fan or fan noise,
you neither need to worry, nor to update anything.

Does anyone else have their BIOS/Embedded Controller all updated but STILL have a 5 second hi-frequency beep-beep-beep?

I find this an extremely annoying inconvienence as a student who frequently works in a quiet library.

Try reinstalling embedded controller (roll back to previous embedded controller and then install 3.03 again). Bios is irrelevant. I had 5 second noise with all embedded controllers except for unofficial 3.02 and official 3.03 that I am currently using. Now I have only 30s noise. Do you still need unofficial 3.02? I may have it somewhere, at least I do have burned CD. However unofficial 3.02 is nearly identical to official 3.03. For example 3.03 did not want to install over unofficial 3.02 claming that update is unnecessary (I had to install official 3.02 and only then 3.03).

I thank geobel for sending me the unoffical embedded controller. I'm still not having any luck fixing the 5-sec. howl :( I have the unofficial 3.02 controller installed (had to roll back to official 3.02 before installing the unofficial) and nothing has changed.

Many T4XX have the problem, but for IBM it's not a problem :(
I sold my T41 to buy a Dell D800
