T42 - why waste money???

#1 Post by QbA » Thu Jul 29, 2004 5:07 pm

I have found two models:

T42- 2378-FVU (256RAM, 1 YEAR WARRANTY) --$2499
T42- 2373-8ZU (512RAM, 3 YEAR WARRANTY) --$1849

PRICE DIFFERENCE: $650

YOU CAN BUY 512RAM FOR AROUND $100. ==> TWO EXTRA YEARS OF WARRANTY ARE WORTH OVER $500???

----------------------------------------------------------------
NOW I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS BEFORE I ORDER MY TP:
1) WHAT ARE SO CALLED EDUCATIONAL MODELS? THEY ARE MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE THAN REGUALR ONCE /WITHOUT DISCOUNT/

2) HOW WOULD YOU RATE THE 1400x1050 RESOLUTION ON THE 14' ?

3) DOES IBM PROVIDE "CLEAN" WINDOWS VERSION? OR IS IT JUST A RECOVERY CD?

IBM do not provide a recovery CD at all. The recover data is on a hidden partition on your hard drive.

You can repartition to get rid of it and call IBM and they will send you the CD.

Recovery CD's are free if you call within the first 30 days, small fee thereafter.

I'm ordering the extended warrenty after a while...a month or so before the one for my machine now expires...then I'll have more money to spent on that.

the 1400x1048 on the FVU is good, I like it. It's readable and all. I got another 256module for my FVU for about 60$ IIRC. Whatever the price on NewEgg is, I don't remember now.

I have a T42p 2373GUU, which is a USA-only model. It's warranty kicked in June 3. I ordered the recovery CD's last Thursday from IBM Canada (I'm in Canada) and they arrived Monday, no charge. I was well past the 30 day marker. Yes, the machine IS covered under the International Warranty in Canada.

Regarding the 1400x1050 res on the 14.1", I have worked with it for quite a while now and I like it.
