T22 Heatsink/Fan for Frankenpad Upgrade on T20?

#1 Post by Highwayman » Mon Apr 17, 2006 3:28 pm

I've read here in the forums about the numerous successful processor upgrades (1gb) that have been performed on the T20. The info has been excellent, but I'm in a quandry about which heatsink/fan unit to use on my T20. I realize the stock T20 heatsink/fan needs to go in the trash, but i'm unsure about which one to get because the parts are so interchangeable between the T series laptops. The consensus points to the heatsink and fan from the T22 for use with a 1gb processor. I ordered one on Ebay (IBM FRU: 26P9317) but received another (IBM PN: 04P3295). Can someone help me here? What FRU# did you use if you used a T22 heatsink and fan? I feel like sending the one back I received, as I want to use the right heatsink/fan combo. Thanks!! :)

I usually get my heatsink/fans 10 at a time, off of Ebay. The T22 ones bolt right up, and work just fine. (Just leave off the lower left screw.) I've found them as cheap as $20 for 10, shipped.

The reason the T22 ones work so much better, is the rubber pad isn't used, and the HS touches the CPU, giving much better cooling. THe HS is also spring-loaded, assuring good thermal transfer.

Why lower left screw
I put mine in and I put in all the screws... It might be a T21 heatsink instead of a T22 though. But im curious as to why lower left screw.

The T22 HS doesn't have the lower left screw. That cover piece does, but I don't get them with the T22 HSs I get off of Ebay, so I don't use them.

The T22 Heatsink and fan (IBM FRU: 26P9317?) has the 3 screw holes with an attached heat spreader type device on top. So I'm not sure what you mean either. Lately, it seems the T2X parts I've purchased off E-bay have been real marginal (junk) lately. Better to find a good seller/dealer and stick with them.

There is a bracket, that has 4 screw holes in it. It is kind of a "H" shaped thing, with 3 small brass inserts, that go into the 3 holes in the T22 HS, and a 4th brass insert that goes into the lower left spot, and has a screw hole there, too. There is also a brass slug, near the right lower screw hole. The 4th (lower left) screw doesn't hold down the HS, but holds down that bracket.

Since I didn't get that bracket, I don't use it. I don't have any problems by not using it.

I also use some Arctic Silver AS5 thermal grease under the HS, where it fits on the CPU.

I have yet to have a cooling issue, even when using a 1.0 CPU on a T20.

Steve, thanks for the response, I'll look at this when it comes time to do the Frankenpad.
