thinkpad 600

i got a barbones laptop off ebay needed battery cmos battery cd drive hard drive
that was fine because i had all this from my not working 600 tp
problem
error 161 & 163 then takes me to the screen with the icon of the lock
is there a way to clear cmos

Press and HOLD the F1 button down while turning on the laptop.

This will get you into EZSetup (BIOS). Fly the birdy to Setup and set the Date and Time, then Exit to Initialize and restart.

i wish it was that easy
when i hold down the f1 key it still takes me to the lock icon screen

Ah! You didn't originally say it was locked.

Get the HMM and review the section on removing the Power On Password (POP) by means of the shorting clips.

If it's a Supervisor Password (SP), use it for a doorstop!

Personally, I am not very excited about the prospect of there being more widely available workarounds for Supervisor Password locked ThinkPads, nor would I be particularly happy to see increased sales of such ThinkPads on eBay.

In your case I can sympathize with the thrill of opening up and fixing a "broken" computer by getting around the password. But while there are certainly other true strories about how such ThinkPads came to be in someone's hands legitimately, I assume that more than half of all such ThinkPads actually arrive on the market after being stolen. That means that they were stolen from people like me, like the folk on ThinkPads.com. The idea that this very same forum could be used by someone for illegitimate means is less than exciting to me.

I agree completely with pkiff. I don't think that we should be helping this process along. Infact, even asking about how to get around the passwords (aside from power passwords) is against forum rules. (See FAQ)

That being said, I bookmarked the link for myself, in case one of the 600Es that I work on gets locked by the user, and the user can't remember the password. Yes, this has happened on more than one occasion. Knowing that I sold them the 600E in the first place, I know that it was stolen. I wish I had kept those boards now.

I agree completely with tfflivemb2 and pkiff, in fact like mentioned it is #12 in the FAQ's for the forum. If my lappy's got ripped off, the thought of someone coming to this forum to get help unlocking them would be painful.

There are plenty of other sources out there to get that sort of sideways information.

Not many places have the information about password removal. I once spend days looking for information on this topic for removal of the password on a 760XD I had at the time and I eventually gave up and replaced the motherboard.

The issue is so sensitive because while many people have password-locked locked laptops because the previous owner forgot their password or something of that sort, those with the information for removal would rather not risk unlocking a stolen laptop.

By cursory reading I must have missed the spirit of the above post before. My attention was much more glued to RULE of this ROAD #1. Nevertheless, I have deleted the password recovery link (and must go to do the same to my other posts), for to start a morality war is not my food. Meanwhile, I go find a place to flog myself
