G-41 keyboard.

#1 Post by jparrot427 » Tue Apr 18, 2006 7:53 am

Hello.

I just yesterday, exchanged my G-41 keyboard with another one. The issued KB was a 91P8086 and I did not like the key clicks. On top of this, the Enter key got loose on me and was iffy. I obtained a new KB, a 91P8142 and what a difference that made. Keys are nice to the touch. The 8086 is made by Chicony and the 8142 by NMB. When you look at the IBM site for parts and select KB, it will show you both FRUs as available. The 91P8142 is no longer available even if in my opinion, it is a much better KB,

Has anybody here had the same experience ? You can find which KB you have by going into Access IBM and looking at System. I had read here a note from an owner of a G-41 ( 40 ? ) who voiced a rather harsh opinion of the KB on his machine, maybe this is the solution.

JP, running a G-41 and liking it.
Two Thinkpads G-41.
Thinkpad i Series 1200 and 3 1300.
Thinkpad 365 XD ( exchanged for a $100 rebate ).
All on WiFi and Ultra VNC. Have fun ! I do.

Hi I just got a G40 about 2 weeks ago and the keyboard is very quiet. The machine is large but very fast. 3GHz. Have you added memory toyours? what does it max out at? I have heard the G40 maxes out at 1024 but some have put 2 ghz in them with success. Do you have nay info about this?

Hello Maven.
Yes, your KB is the nice one. Look into "System" and see if you should have the 91P8142 or the 91P8086. Mine was the 8086 and it is the bad one if bad it is. It works but not as nice as the 8142. They are made by different suppliers to IBM. My Enter key got iffy and I wanted to fix it so I replaced it as I got a 8042 on eBay for 1/2 price as IBM was provided.
Mine is a G41, not G40 as yours and this might explain why the KBs are different, maybe. Nice machines they are.
If you want copies of the ERD CDs, let me know and for tuppence, I will burn some for you. Are you on Pro or Home ?
Thinkpadfully yours, JP.

Sorry to be pesky but I some how missed to look in access IBM. I also somehow forgot to installit. I will do that now. Hope I can find it, although the ibm web site is awesome for the information they give. I have a sony Vaio and there is absolutely no info on it it is pathetic. good thing it never has problems. bot you can really learn much about it.
