Starting a THinkPad T43 with the lid closed

#1 Post by ccmfixit » Tue Apr 18, 2006 6:27 pm

Hi - I just received a ThinkPad T43, and I want to use it with an external monitor, keyboard, etc., but without a docking station. I have a monitor stand above it holding the monitor. Turning it off is not a problem (Start, Shut Down), but I can't find a way to turn it on without pulling it out and opening the lid. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Chris Manning

you could do boot on lan - not sure exactly how it works, but a magic packet can instruct the system to turn on provided the feature is turned on in the bios.

This is precisely what a port replicator (not a docking station) is for. Plug the monitor, keyboard, mouse, power supply, etc. into the port replicator. Plonk the T43 onto the replicator and turn it on with the lid closed. Shut it down, eject it and take it away. Super device. ... JD Hurst

Agreed, but it's so expensive for such a simple device.

I wish PC's just had keyboards like the old Apple Extended ADB keyboards with the power button on the top right. Just plug in an external keyboard and power on from there. Very simple.

I did a little searching and the 'magic packet' to send over lan to turn on your PC is:

FFFFFFFFFFFF010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506
010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506
010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506010203040506
010203040506010203040506

where the repeating numbers is your network card mac address so in this case, it is 01:02:03:04:05:06

The correct term is 'wake on lan' i believe, so just do a google search on that and you should find something.

Interesting topic. Try http://www.matcode.com/wol.htm for s/w etc. (nothing to do with me!)

Checked my T43. 'Wake on LAN' enabled in bios and PCI at version 2.2.

I will be interested to see how this topic develops.

Just get a used dock off of ebay or from a recycler. That will keep the costs down. I don't think it's too expensive (the dock or prot replicator) to what you get. You get a bit of functionality and it can solve a lot of problems in the process.

Other than that, it seems you might try the magic packet wake-on-lan thingie. I don't think their is a remote power button feature, although we could sure use something like DIGITALgimpus suggests!

I just looked at the BIOS menu of my T42 and there is also the option to Resume on modem ring. This should work from Standby and probably Hibernate, however I don't think it would power up a computer that was turned off.

Reading the info on the web link I posted, it seems that the password is not necessarily needed. How safe is the concept of WOL from outsiders?

why not just open the cover and press the power button, once you do this, you can close the cover. To make this work, set the option for close cover to do nothing.

thinkpad configurations, power management, advanced, when I close the lid of my portable computer; do nothing

Why don't you just open the laptop and use both screens?

It seems the TP is tucked away under a small stand for the monitor and pulling it out every time to turn it on is a pain...

The Wake-On-LAN will only work if it is hooked up to a network and a computer is available to send the special packet...

If unable to power on via the Wake-On-LAN and a phone line is near by the Resume on Modem ring would be the most promising....
