X30 LCD bezel crack - typical flaw?

#1 Post by aabram » Wed Apr 19, 2006 5:12 am

Just discovered few days ago that my venerable X30 has deep crack in the right lower corner of the LCD bezel. It's right between the hinge and the edge, running from the bottom to up to the screen corner, just slightly curving around that round spot. It's not particularily wide but it's there and it's deep, with slight bending it reveals the structure beneath. LCD is not damaged and I barely notice it but still, it's a defect.

Since we have to X30's in the family I had closer look at the other one too - and behold, there it is, in exactly the same spot, exactly same looking. Considering we've not noticed them before and laptops see regular use, I assume these cracks developed roughly within the same timeframe.

I had a look my friends X30 the other day and guess what, there was that crack again in the bottom right corner. His X30 is older than mine and he's been living with that defect for a long time now. It hasn't grown so he's been content having it.

With 3 out of 3 X30's that I have access to having the same defect I'm wondering whether this is typical flaw on these series? Do other X-series suffer from the same defect? Rest assured these babies have been taken good care of, no dropping, no holding by the screen or anything abusive. They've all been used as a laptops though, not as delicate china, which means they've been carried around in various conditions, packed between papers and books, had few bumps on the ride etc. But not any accidents or abuse, especially regarding the screen.

Does a warranty cover it? I have few months of it left so I could make use of it, if possible.

Seems to be typical. A friend sent in 2x X31 with cracks on the LCD inner bezel (the frame you look at when looking at the screen) and even cracks in the mainframe (the plastic which include the hand rests.

IBM repair replaced everything without the slightest complaint.

No problems with my X30. Only flaw is my own fault, dropped the machine accidently, lower left corner needed some glue. But still, very useful and compact toy. I use this one to take notes in class...
