Problems accessing Pre Desktop Area; pl HELP

My system software got corrupted with some downlaods and I now need to restore to factory settings the T60p (2007-82U).

I am tryiing everything I can think of from this forum and from IBM Knowledge base. Bout notrhing seems to work.

Everytime I press F11, I get this DOS like message "MISSING OPERATING SYSTEM' and gets stuck.

Please Help!! I am at sea on this one! :oops:

do a cold boot and use the blue button which SHOULD take you directly to the predesktop recovery area..

then run the recovery..

also, make the recovery CD set when you can..
all you need is one CR-R and a DVD CD-R..

and next time don't download a virus.. :roll:

Thanks Bill! I have tried to press the Blue button but it constantly leads me to the Bios and not to the recovery area. I spoke to IBM and they mentioned it could be that the recovery area was corrupted (How that could happen, I don't know....).

Now IBM suggests that the laptop needs to get back to them so that they can replace the original recovery partition with a friesh one.....so, I guess that seems to be the only option for me now.

I tried making the recovery disks, and that too is not possible as I get some vague error and the software stops...

I value and welcome your ideas.

Thanks, but I do not have an external FDD or any FDD that fits into the Ultrabay slot. Is there any such utility that can be burnt on a bootable CD ROM? Thanks for any help and inputs.

Incidentally, I spoke to IBM and they mentioned that since it was a 'software issue' it was not covered by warranty, and I woudl have to shell out about US$ 35 to repair the pre-desktop area (and that too will be only after the whole hard disk has been reformatted, partitions removed et al).

Have you created the Product Recovery Disc set? You can boot from them and restore your ThinkPad to factory condition.

Go to Start > All Programs > ThinkVantage > Create Recovery Media. (I hope I got that right - I have an older version) You can create them on CD/R's or on (1) CD and (1) DVD (assuming you have a DVD burner).

Unfortunately I did not create the recovery disks earlier, and I have learnt my lesson! :(

Any way that I can recover the pre-desktop area without a FDD and not having the disks?
